March is Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month, and it feels fitting to share my journey with this condition that has shaped our lives. My hope is that one day my son, who lives with cerebral palsy, might articulate his experiences and insights, providing a perspective that only he can convey.
Dear Cerebral Palsy,
You entered our lives four years ago, and since then, nothing has been quite the same. The challenges you present are overwhelming, yet I strive to view you as a catalyst for growth and learning.
Your presence brings a constant stream of obstacles, but it has also taught me to cherish the small, unexpected moments of joy that life offers. You’ve compelled me to confront daunting and often confusing information regarding the well-being of my child. Yet, through this process, I’ve discovered the strength to navigate uncertainty and tackle problems head-on.
You’ve tested our resolve repeatedly, but it’s your challenges that have instilled in me a determination to persevere, regardless of fatigue or pain. While you may have limited my son’s ability to express his needs and desires, you’ve helped me develop an acute awareness of his non-verbal cues, deepening our bond in ways I never thought possible.
Your impact has often led to feelings of isolation, but it has also connected us with some of the most compassionate and dedicated individuals I’ve ever met. You’ve made me fear the unkindness that can arise from ignorance, yet you’ve also opened my heart to others, encouraging me to extend kindness and understanding.
In public, you’ve drawn unwanted attention and prompted insensitive questions, but because of you, I’ve learned to approach others with disabilities with empathy and respect. I engage with them, offering a smile and a friendly “Hello,” rather than turning away.
Witnessing the lives of those affected by you has led me to question the fairness of life; yet, you’ve also helped me see the intrinsic value and resilience within every individual.
Cerebral palsy makes daily life complex. It strips away the ability to move freely, speak clearly, or even perform basic tasks. Yet, through you, I’ve come to understand that the essence of life lies in companionship and unwavering support. I am committed to being there for my son, sharing every moment and navigating the ups and downs together. No matter what challenges arise, we will find ways to laugh, love, and lead fulfilling lives, something you cannot take away from us.

In summary, while cerebral palsy brings numerous challenges, it has also fostered resilience, empathy, and deep connections in our lives.
