Why I’ve Given Up on My Baby Wearing Socks

Where are my baby’s socks? It’s a question I find myself asking far too often. Seriously, where do they go? I know he starts the day wearing them, but by the time we arrive at our destination, they seem to have vanished into thin air.

I’ve come up with a few theories about their disappearance:

  1. They’re hiding somewhere in the car.
  2. He might have eaten them.
  3. He’s secretly a magician.
  4. He discarded them before we even got to the car.
  5. He and the dogs are plotting against me.
  6. He’s tossing them out the window.
  7. He’s shoving them down his diaper.
  8. He could be selling them on the black market.
  9. He’s donating them to babies in need.
  10. Or perhaps he’s just testing my sanity.

I’ve invested in a mountain of socks—trust me, my credit card bill will attest to that. Yet, they seem to be a myth around here. I guess my little guy just isn’t a fan of those tiny footwear items.

When I walk into a store with him, coat on but socks nowhere to be found, I can practically feel the judgemental stares. I hear the whispers: “That baby should have socks on!” Well, unless I plan on supergluing them to his feet, they’re not staying on. So, keep your parenting critiques to yourself, please.

I’ve even resorted to carrying an extra pair in my bag. Yes, I’m that mom who tries to put socks on him mid-shopping trip, but inevitably, they end up lost again. I have a million other things I could be focusing on—like chasing him around the house or scrolling through Pinterest for recipes I’ll never make. Or even watching reruns of my favorite shows. The last thing I want to do is stress over socks, especially when my kid is safe, clean, and not freezing. I consider that a success.

So, if you see us out and about and my child is sockless, it’s not a reflection of my parenting skills. It’s simply for my peace of mind. Some kids might not like vegetables; mine just doesn’t like socks. And honestly, I’m done worrying about it. Socks are officially off the table.
