Family Getaway vs. Genuine Vacation

We’re heading out for a family getaway! However, I’m somewhat hesitant to label it as a “vacation” since my toddler will be joining us. Sure, I’m taking time off work and will be soaking up the sun at the beach, but I’m not counting on much relaxation; “relaxation” is definitely not my son’s forte.

In fact, his middle name might as well be “GET DOWN FROM THERE! YOU’RE GOING TO HURT YOURSELF!” Typically, vacations involve lounging, reading, and enjoying a few drinks, but with a toddler in the mix, the concept of a vacation transforms into something entirely different.

Here are a few reasons why I suspect this family getaway won’t resemble a true vacation:

  1. Reading
My partner and I made some last-minute book purchases online, and honestly, I could almost hear my computer chuckling at my naivety. The chances of us actually finding time to read on the beach are slim to none. Most of the reading I’ll be doing will involve navigating GPS or the latest train stories.
  2. Sleeping
This time, it’s not the computer laughing—it’s my son, who has decided that 6:30 a.m. is the perfect time to start the day, regardless of the day of the week or where we are. His internal clock doesn’t recognize vacation mode, and why would it? For him, every day is a new adventure!
  3. Relaxing
Lately, my son’s favorite activities include ignoring instructions and bouncing off the walls. To make matters worse, although he’s clever enough to talk back, he’s still toddler-brained enough to run in circles on a busy street. So, relaxation? Not in the cards.
  4. Drinking
Oh, there will definitely be some drinking involved—just not as much as I’d hoped. Most of it will be crammed into the fleeting hours between him finally dozing off and us crashing shortly after. But hey, it’s something!
  5. Miscellaneous
What else do people typically indulge in during vacations? Movies? Forget it—toddler. Dining out? Nope—toddler. Enjoying intimate moments? Also a toddler. Mini-golf might actually happen, but I use the term “play” loosely.

I’m not suggesting we won’t have a blast; I’m genuinely looking forward to it. But it’s not quite the same as a vacation sans kids. At least I might wake up a bit more refreshed this time around! For more tips on navigating family vacations, check out this insightful blog post here.
