15 Reasons I’m Putting Off Potty Training My Youngest

Listen up, little one. You’re the baby of the family—the final piece of our puzzle. You’ll always be seen as too young, not big enough, or just too adorable for us to let go of these cherubic years. We’ll indulge in your cute mispronunciations and invent secret names for things that only we understand. We’ll shower you with baby toys and adventures because we’re not ready to say goodbye to this stage of your life just yet.

But believe me, that’s not why I’m holding off on potty training you.

Here’s the honest truth, darling: I’ve been through the wringer with your siblings. Your sister and two brothers have left me with some unforgettable experiences.

  1. The constant battle of keeping underwear on their bodies.
  2. The sheer chaos of trying to prevent the boys from exploring their little bits.
  3. The endless worry of checking if that sound was just a fart or something more.
  4. The inevitable pee dribbles that seem to appear everywhere.
  5. The stained mattresses that tell tales of small accidents.
  6. The mountain of dirty sheets that never seems to shrink.
  7. The splatters on the walls that make me wonder how they happened.
  8. The persistent odor of urine in the bathrooms, thanks to multiple attempts at using the toilet.
  9. The unending cycle of hand-washing because tiny hands and big hands often collide.
  10. The mess that comes with toddlers trying to clean themselves up.
  11. The debates over how much liquid they could drink before bedtime.
  12. The midnight wake-ups fueled by even the tiniest sips of water.
  13. The sheer terror of public toilets that sends them into a panic.
  14. The wet car seats that seem to be a given.
  15. The ongoing need to stay alert for potty emergencies.

Sure, I’ll help you with wiping and take you to the toilet when you ask. But honestly, I have better things to do than to ask you if you need to go every 10 minutes, just to avoid accidents on the carpet. The diaper bag is for diapers, and it’s time for it to retire peacefully, not be repurposed as an emergency change kit because I rushed the process.

Right now, I’m embracing a more relaxed approach to parenting that doesn’t quite mesh with potty training. If you need to go and can’t manage your pants, just use the diaper, kiddo. You’re only 2—there’s plenty of time for the big kid stuff. My to-do list is already overflowing, and I don’t have hours to spare watching you dribble a few drops into the toilet, trying to prevent a mini toilet paper disaster, and then chasing you to wash your hands—all just to repeat the cycle shortly after.

So, I’m stepping back from this one. You’ll get the hang of it before kindergarten, I’m sure. And if not, well, maybe your dad will take over the potty training duties.

In summary, I’m choosing to embrace the chaos of parenting and give myself a break from the potty training hustle. We have plenty of time, and I’m confident you’ll master it soon enough.
