As a lactation consultant, my journey began as a mother determined to breastfeed my baby. Before diving into this world, I had little understanding of what lactation consultants did, the heated debates surrounding breastfeeding, or the pressures faced by both breastfeeding and formula-feeding mothers. My only goal was to successfully nurse my son, but it was an uphill battle. He refused to latch, turning away from my breast as if it was something undesirable. I felt lost and disconnected from both him and my own body.

The day after his birth, the wonderful doulas who helped during labor came to assist me. With a perfect mix of empathy and skill, they guided my breast to my son’s mouth, staying with me until we figured it out—though it took several weeks for both of us to get the hang of it. When I inquired if they were lactation consultants, they chuckled, saying, “No, it takes around 2,000 hours of experience to earn that title.”

They were absolutely right. Pursuing my certification as a lactation consultant required me to log 2,000 hours of direct contact with breastfeeding mothers, study rigorous college-level science courses, and complete specialized training. Much like my initial experience with breastfeeding, this journey was challenging yet rewarding.

Over the years, I’ve noticed a shift in how mothers connect online, and unfortunately, not all experiences with lactation support are as positive as mine. Some women feel pressured to breastfeed or that their struggles aren’t understood. Many report feeling judged for their decisions when they decide to stop breastfeeding for any reason.

Like any profession, there are always a few who may not embody the kindness and compassion we strive for. However, this is not the norm. It’s crucial to understand that not everyone offering breastfeeding guidance is a lactation consultant. There are various levels of support, from volunteers to lactation counselors, and only those with “IBCLC” after their name are certified professionals who completed extensive training.

Here are seven essential insights about lactation consultants that may surprise you:

  1. We Don’t Dislike Formula: We recognize the benefits of breast milk, but we also understand that formula can be a necessary alternative for mothers who can’t produce enough milk or who can’t access donated breast milk. When a baby is underweight, our priority is feeding them, and we often provide formula while supporting mothers in boosting their milk supply.
  2. Understanding Milk Production: We know firsthand that not every mom can produce sufficient milk. Many factors can affect milk supply, and we’re here to support mothers in achieving their breastfeeding goals without judgment.
  3. We Care Deeply: It may sound cliché, but we genuinely care about our clients. The challenges of breastfeeding weigh heavily on us, and we are overjoyed when things finally click for the mothers we support.
  4. Non-judgmental Support: We respect that some mothers choose not to breastfeed for deeply personal reasons, including past trauma or incompatible medications. It is not our role to question your choices; rather, we are here to assist you in whatever way you need.
  5. Empowerment Through Information: Many mothers give up breastfeeding due to a lack of information. Our goal is to provide tailored, accurate information so that you can make well-informed decisions about your feeding journey.
  6. No Need for Modesty: We have seen it all—breasts, babies, and the inevitable messes that come with them. While we appreciate those who prefer privacy, know that you can be open with us.
  7. Your Goals Matter: Whether you want to exclusively breastfeed, introduce formula, or nurse for a specific duration, we are here to support your unique goals. Ultimately, it’s your body and your baby.

Many lactation consultants, like myself, began their journeys as mothers who faced challenges and sought to help others.
