In an inspiring act of kindness, a 7-year-old boy has shown us that even the smallest among us can make a significant impact. This young champion raised over $10,000 to help schools grappling with the ongoing water crisis in Flint, Michigan.
The troubles in Flint began in April 2014 when city officials switched from Detroit’s water supply to water sourced from the Flint River, leading to widespread contamination. According to reports, around 8,657 children under six were exposed to harmful levels of lead. When young Caleb Johnson from Virginia learned about the plight of Flint’s children, he felt compelled to take action. Upon contacting Eisenhower Elementary School, he discovered that the students needed more than just bottled water; they urgently required hand sanitizer, as many were hesitant to use the tap water for washing their hands.
As Flint’s water crisis continued, President Obama declared a state of emergency, while local leaders struggled to address the dire needs of the community. The situation garnered national attention, leading to donations of bottled water from across the country, including support from celebrities. However, school secretary Lisa Martinez pointed out that hand sanitizer was the most pressing need, a fact that highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by Flint’s educators and students.
Inspired by his conversation with Martinez, Caleb, with the help of his parents, launched a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise $500 to provide hand sanitizer for every classroom at Eisenhower. To his astonishment, he quickly surpassed his goal, raising a remarkable $10,701 in just 17 days! This amount was enough to supply hand sanitizer to all 12 elementary schools in the city. Caleb’s future plans include extending his efforts to local daycares and women’s shelters in Flint. “That was the best day of my life, trying to help a different school. It doesn’t matter if you’re small; it doesn’t mean you can’t do big things,” he shared.
