For those who claim coffee doesn’t make a difference, I must admit, I just don’t get it. Dig a little deeper, and I’m certain our insides wouldn’t align. Coffee beans are my lifeline. They’re the fuel for my fire, the vital ingredient that keeps my world spinning. You see, I absolutely need my coffee.
Without my beloved brew, I feel like only half of myself. Take, for instance, my trips to the store; I can easily walk in for one simple item, only to wander aimlessly for 20 minutes, completely blanking on what it was I needed.
Without coffee, I think it’s perfectly acceptable to drive the kids to school still wearing my slippers. I might even convince myself that my partner’s V-neck sweater is appropriate attire for the school’s book fair.
Yes, life without coffee is not a good one. It leads me to believe that a twisty tie in my hair is a legitimate hairstyle. I crank up the car radio when all I really want is more heat. It makes my son’s winter boots seem like a fashionable choice for me. Without that morning cup of joe, even the mailbox with the day’s newspaper feels like a trek to the farthest reaches of the earth. I might even pack five Fruit Roll-Ups in my kids’ lunches, thinking it’s a delightful surprise. And the thought of emptying the dishwasher? That feels like lifting boulders to me.
Coffee is essential; it connects the dots in my brain and makes responding to morning talk radio a lively affair. It transforms me into a powerhouse, allowing me to tackle an hour-long treadmill session on a steep incline without breaking a sweat. Crank the radio to ear-bleeding levels, and boredom is a thing of the past.
One of the first responsibilities I gave my kids was to help out with coffee preparation. As soon as they could drag a kitchen stool to the counter, they were entrusted with measuring out two heaping scoops of Folger’s grounds. I handle the water, and all they need to do is press the button to start the delightful gurgling sound. Our household has grown to find the soft rumble of Mr. Coffee in the morning quite comforting.
To my children, the sound of coffee brewing is a promise that they won’t be left with just a six-pack of Pringles for lunch that day. In summary, coffee is more than just a beverage for me; it’s a lifeline that keeps the chaos of motherhood manageable. Without it, I’m just not the mom I aspire to be. So here’s to that daily cup of magic that fuels our lives!
