Parenting

I recently stumbled upon a folded note while going through some old family albums, and it instantly took me back eight years. It was a six-page document filled with my own self-important “guidelines and explanations” for my in-laws as they graciously agreed to care for my daughter while I embarked on an unforgettable 10-day trip to Italy with my mom.
At that time, my daughter was just one year old, and we had just moved into a new home the week before. Boxes were everywhere, and the typical chaos that comes with a toddler was in full swing. Despite the pandemonium, my in-laws traveled all the way from Arizona to Seattle to look after her, allowing me to indulge in a culinary adventure across Italy. I remain incredibly thankful for their generosity, and even more so, I chuckle at the thought of their reactions upon reading the instructions I prepared.
To “assist” them, I compiled what I thought was a thorough, helpful list of everything they would need to know to keep my daughter safe and entertained during those 10 days. Now, with eight years of parenting—and a second child—under my belt, I can only imagine how amusing my detailed notes must have been to two smart, loving parents who had already raised their own children.
What follows is a glimpse into the note, along with a peek into their likely thoughts as they read it… I share this with all the moms out there preparing to write their own lists of “guidelines” for the first time they leave their little ones. And for those of us with older kids, revisiting those initial moments of separation is both nostalgic and reflective. Keep those notes! One day, they’ll remind you of your journey and perhaps inspire you to step up your game for your in-laws’ next holiday gift.
