As we dive into another year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on resolutions we may or may not have set. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably already flubbed yours—or perhaps you skipped the whole thing altogether! Personally, I’ve never found resolutions to be particularly effective. However, I do wish my child would set a few goals for himself. Despite my best efforts in parenting, there are still some areas where I’d love to see a commitment from him.
So, here’s a whimsical list of resolutions I wish my 5-year-old would embrace this year. Of course, I realize that expecting a child to stick to resolutions is a bit of a stretch, but as a weary parent, I can dream, can’t I?
- Eat dinner
- Eat healthy foods
- Enjoy the meal I spent two hours preparing
- Consume the leftovers I heated up for you
- Try these two sugar packets
- For the love of all that is holy, just eat something!
- Finish your meal in a timely manner
- Pick up your clothes
- Clean your room
- Clean your own backside!
- Go to bed on time
- Actually go to bed
- Get more sleep
- Sleep until sunrise
- Pretend you’re asleep
- Just lie still and be quiet for a few hours?
- Practice kindness
- Stand up for yourself
- Avoid hitting
- Use your words
- Steer clear of bad language
- Engage in conversation with us
- Share about your day!
- Tone it down
- Don’t chatter too much
- Don’t talk back
- Just stop talking already!
- Share your toys
- Hand that back to me
- Show some respect
- Use your manners
- Say “please”
- Say “thank you” (again, please!)
- Say “thank you!” (for crying out loud!)
- Show a little gratitude for once!!!
- Respond with “you’re welcome”
- Limit screen time
Oh, the chaos of parenthood! Sometimes, I just wish they would sit and watch TV instead.
