If you’re one of those lucky parents with a child who can quietly engage in a puzzle or delve into a Pinterest project without assistance, consider yourself fortunate. Unfortunately, that is not my reality. Like many parents, I yearn for a peaceful hour—one where I can tackle mundane tasks like hunting for lost socks or finally sipping that glass of water I poured six hours ago. Naturally, I turned to Pinterest for some creative activity ideas. Here’s a rundown of activities I attempted with my toddlers that didn’t quite go as planned (or left my pets bewildered):
- Sensory Bin with Rice
Let’s just say it was a rice storm of epic proportions. After a brief period of fun, it turned into a food fight and eventually, a snack. - Art with Contact Paper
Instead of sticking items onto the contact paper, my kids found it much more entertaining to stick the paper to everything else—like the floor, the cats, and even their faces! - Using Tongs for Pom-Pom Sorting
Handing my toddlers tongs is like giving them a new toy. The concept of sorting is lost as they preferred to pinch each other, our pets, and yes, even my thigh fat. - Chalkboard Creations
Also known as “let’s see how crunchy chalk can be.” It was all fun until one of them discovered the joys of munching on the chalk. - Color-Coded Popsicle Sticks
This activity requires a level of concentration that even the most patient toddler might lack. My little ones couldn’t sit still long enough to sort anything! - Pom-Pom Drop Experiment
I crafted an elaborate contraption out of toilet paper rolls, only for my kids to be more interested in terrorizing the cats than actually watching the pom-poms roll. - Sticker Mayhem
If I never saw another sticker again, it would be too soon. They ended up stuck to the cats, inside my pants, and even caught the attention of a kind stranger at the bank. - Squish Bags
I had high hopes for this one—until my toddler managed to slice it open in seconds. He watched me clean up the mess for five minutes, but at least he was quiet. - Sorting Tray Shenanigans
Imagine a muffin tin sliding across the table, sending toy animals flying in search of their respective colors. That’s right—chaos reigned supreme. - Glitter Jars
A recipe for disaster, these jars are basically head injuries waiting to happen. I think I’ll pass on glitter for a while.
As I wrap this up, my youngest is currently engaged in a riveting game of inserting and removing a straw from a juice box carton. There’s juice all over the floor, and he might’ve eaten part of the straw wrapper, but hey, at least he’s quiet. This doesn’t come from Pinterest, but maybe I should post it anyway. You can find it among other tutorials on how to finally drink that glass of water you poured six hours ago. For more ideas on home activities, check out this helpful blog post. Summary
Parenting and Pinterest can sometimes lead to hilarious disasters, especially when toddlers are involved. From sensory bins turning into food fights to stickers becoming a permanent fixture on pets, my attempts at Pinterest activities were anything but calm. They remind us that sometimes the most entertaining moments come from the unexpected chaos of parenting.
