7 Commitments I Make But Rarely Honor

7 Commitments I Make But Rarely HonorGet Pregnant Fast

Since the arrival of my son about a year and a half ago, it feels like I’ve been strapped into a rollercoaster that I didn’t sign up for. It’s exhilarating, completely out of my control, and everything rushes by so quickly that I can barely catch my breath. As the New Year rolls around, many of us are eager to set resolutions, vowing to improve ourselves. While many will hit the gym fervently for a week before slipping back into their old habits, I’m here to admit that I’ll likely continue to stumble in my journey as a parent. Here are seven promises I know I won’t keep:

  1. To Maintain Cleanliness
My car is a disaster zone, my sheets are overdue for a wash, and my son’s high chair still bears the remnants of his last meal. Let’s face it: I’m not destined to be the dad with a spotless home (sorry, Dad). Life is chaotic, and I’ve learned to embrace the mess that comes with it.
  2. To Ensure My Son Is Always Dressed Properly
I’m improving, but I can’t count the number of times I’ve forgotten my son’s jacket, socks, or even shoes. He’s a master at removing them and tossing them aside, and I’m pretty sure my memory is slipping due to my caffeine consumption. At least I’ve mastered the art of remembering his pants. Small victories, right?
  3. To Always Pack Snacks
Have you ever left the house thinking you’d be back in a flash, only to find yourself out for hours with a hungry toddler? Always pack snacks. If there’s one lesson I’ve learned, it’s that snacks are essential for keeping the peace.
  4. To Treasure Every Single Moment
Let’s debunk the myth that every moment with your child is magical. When your little angel turns into a tantrum-throwing whirlwind, that’s not exactly a time to cherish; it’s a moment requiring copious amounts of patience. It’s important to recognize that I’m human and not every instance will be picture-perfect, and that’s okay.
  5. To Cut Back on Coffee
I know, it sounds unbelievable coming from me. Research suggests that reducing coffee intake is beneficial, so I’ll aim for a more reasonable limit—maybe 18 cups a day. Okay, just kidding! Coffee, please don’t leave me.
  6. To Prioritize Sleep
I genuinely want to improve my sleep habits. I know how crucial rest is for my health and mood, yet it often feels unattainable. With the whirlwind of parenthood, I’ll attempt to set a bedtime for myself, but I have a feeling I’ll be back to my usual five hours per night in no time. Again, coffee is my only true love.
  7. To Master Laundry
For some reason, handling laundry is a Herculean task for me. I’ll attempt to decipher the washing instructions, but to be honest, it all seems like nonsense. My wife’s favorite sweaters will likely continue to meet their untimely demise week after week.

And there you have it—my not-so-great list of promises I’ll likely break. While I might try to convince others that I’m on a path to self-improvement, the reality is that I’m just as flawed as everyone else. By the end of the month, many of these pledges will likely be extinguished, but at least I’m being honest about it.
