Sometimes Motherhood is a Challenge

Being a mom can often feel like an uphill battle. Sometimes, I resort to running the vacuum cleaner just to encourage my kids to retreat to their rooms for a bit of peace. Other times, I sneak into the kitchen for some chocolate after declaring that all the treats have vanished. There are nights when I skip bath time—maybe even two or three nights in a row. I’ve even found myself silently cursing, my mouth covered by my hands, trying to keep my cool.

Sometimes I agree to join the “Superhero Adventure,” only to never make it off the couch. I might drive to a Chick-fil-A farther from home just to make it more convenient when nap time approaches. I tell my partner that I’m using the restroom, but really, I’m just taking a moment to breathe behind a closed door. I promise to catch a show with you, and then drift off to sleep instead.

Then there are moments when I think I might just lose it if I have to pretend to eat one more imaginary cookie. I often say, “Just one minute!” but end up taking twenty. I pretend that your favorite CDs have mysteriously disappeared from the collection. There are times when I raise my voice instead of asking nicely.

But then, there are the fantastic moments. We play school together, and I find myself genuinely enjoying it. Watching you ride your bikes fills me with joy as you race around. Our nature walks lead us to discover unique pinecones, and cooking dinner together sometimes results in a delicious meal. I find myself wanting to dance when I see you both playing music, and we share hearty laughs while playing Simon Says. Running errands with you can even feel like a fun outing with friends. I often catch a glimpse of you both saying a blessing before dinner, and I sing loudly in the car just for the fun of it.

It’s a rollercoaster of emotions—some days are tough, while others are a breeze. But through it all, my love for you remains constant.
