Young, Beautiful, and Fancy: A Journey Through Time

“Embrace your fancy side today.” –Sarah Jennings

Once upon a time, I was youthful and drawn to beautiful things, aspiring to be quite fancy. Fast forward to today, and the reality of parenthood has transformed my perspective. They say age is just a number, but when my children start counting the lines on my forehead—“Mom, did you know you have—one, two, three, four, five—six wrinkles?”—it’s hard to feel young at heart. Somewhere along the way, what I once deemed pretty has become overwhelming and somewhat mundane. And fancy? Well, let’s just say I’m far too exhausted for that.

When nostalgia strikes, I can’t help but reflect on the stark contrasts between my past and present. Let’s indulge in this trip down memory lane, shall we? After all, it provides a much-needed distraction from those pesky wrinkle counts!

Here are 10 ways “fancy” has evolved from then to now:

  1. Back in the day, fancy meant dedicating an hour to primping before a night out, with a glass of wine in one hand and a flatiron in the other. Now? Fancy is a three-minute shower, tossing my hair into a ponytail, and grabbing the least wrinkled shirt that’s clean-ish.
  2. Fancy then included a tiny Prada clutch, barely big enough for a cell phone and a credit card. Compare that to fancy now, which is an impulse buy from Target (because let’s face it, everything from Target is an impulse buy), large enough to hold a wallet, three books, Legos, a gift card that expired three years ago, markers, and even a butter knife—twice! Yet I can never locate a pen when I actually need one.
  3. Fancy used to mean long, wine-infused dinners with my husband, followed by nights filled with dancing and laughter, with Sundays spent nursing hangovers. Now, fancy is any meal where the waitress doesn’t hand out crayons to the kids, and sleeping in until 7 a.m. on a Sunday feels like a luxury.
  4. Back then, fancy brunches featured mimosas and Bloody Marys with a beer chaser. Nowadays, it’s all about savoring a Pumpkin Spice Latte with a shot of espresso on the side.
  5. Once upon a time, I meticulously chose china patterns to add to my Macy’s bridal registry. Now? It’s all about plastic utensils and partitioned plates adorned with cartoon animals.
  6. In the past, fancy meant designer jeans, a sequined top, and those “fabulous” stiletto heels my friend dubbed “f***-me shoes.” These days, fancy is yoga pants that miraculously lack yogurt, coffee, or other unidentified stains.
  7. Fancy then was splurging on Chanel eyeshadow, Nars blush, and La Mer moisturizer after spending hours wandering Sephora. Now? I rely on a tub of Nivea, drugstore mascara, and a wrinkle cream I consistently forget to use (hence the six deep forehead lines).
  8. Regular mani-pedi appointments defined fancy in my earlier years. Now, a quick polish change happens on the toilet while my kids are splashing in the bath.
  9. Fancy once meant indulging in nine luxurious hours of sleep on 300-thread count sheets. Today, it’s five hours of sleep—interrupted or not—anywhere I can find it. Seriously, I’m beyond tired.
  10. In the past, fancy was rich wine, decadent chocolate, good books, loud music, and heartfelt conversations because life is too short. Today, fancy still includes those same joys, reminding us that life remains precious.

While we may not be as young or energetic as we once were, we can still find ways to embrace our fancy side. And by “fancy,” I mean slipping into our favorite sweatpants, adding an extra spoonful of sugar to our spiced latte, curling up with a cozy blanket, and enjoying a well-deserved nap. Have I mentioned how utterly exhausted I am?
