I can hardly believe my daughter just turned 13 last month. It feels surreal to think how quickly we’ve arrived at this stage. One moment, I was celebrating her first steps, and now she’s rolling her eyes at me, claiming I “hate her and think she’s fat and ugly.” Ah, the joys of parenting!
In celebration of her transition into the teenage years, here are the 13 greatest things about parenting a 13-year-old girl:
- I no longer have to remember anything, which is a relief because apparently, I “just don’t even know.”
- Listening to the latest pop hits constantly reminds me of how much better music used to be. Seriously, any genre from any era has my vote over today’s tunes.
- Thanks to her, I’ll never have to “even” again, as I’m reminded to “don’t even.”
- I’ve acquired an in-house fashion critic, which I didn’t know I needed until now. How lucky am I?
- My cooking skills are on the rise, especially since my fashion critic also moonlights as a food critic. I’m currently focusing on improving my responses like “ugh,” “fine,” “’kay,” and “whatevs.”
- I’ve sharpened my negotiation skills from “When I count to three…” to “Can someone pass me the Merlot?”
- I have a newfound respect for logic and reason.
- I was able to cut the cable cord. I get more drama from her five-minute recap of study hall than I could ever get from a full season of any series.
- I’m walking a lot more, which is great for my health. I find myself navigating malls, holding up various clothing items while she responds with “no,” “nope,” “ick,” “seriously, Mom,” and “of course you would like that.” Who knew I could get a workout like this?
- I have a personal tech support team ready at all times, helping me with my iPhone before I even realize I need assistance.
- I’m discovering hidden talents, like eliciting 25 distinct moods from my daughter in under five seconds.
- I’m picking up a new language, one that consists of eye rolls, door slams, foot stomps, and deep sighs, forming an entire conversation on its own.
- My heart swells with pride every day. Despite the challenges, she brings me immense joy.
In all seriousness, she’s an incredible kid, and I love her more than anything. I’m sure that in a few years, when she’s okay with being seen with me, she’ll hug me and express her love in return.
