A weary new mother carries her baby through the aisles of Target, her hair pulled into a messy bun and her eyes heavy from sleepless nights. She stops to admire a chic dress hanging on a discount rack, contemplating whether the ruffles would hide her postpartum curves. “$25 feels like a splurge,” she mutters, reluctantly placing the dress back. Just then, she hears the laughter of two women nearby, carefree and radiant, their carts filled with goodies as they head toward the dressing rooms, steaming lattes in hand. A twinge of jealousy hits her. “I truly miss that,” she murmurs, steering her cart toward the diaper aisle, gently kissing her sleepy infant’s head.
