Tired of Bargaining with Your Kids? Embrace the Bright Line Rule

As any mom with a legal background knows, the bright line rule is a game changer. Let me spare you the hefty law school tuition and break it down for you: a bright line rule streamlines decision-making by eliminating ambiguity—no exceptions allowed. Think of the speed limit: regardless of whether you’re a skilled race car driver cruising at a safe 25 mph in a 15 mph zone, the answer is simple. The judge has one question: Over 15? Time to pay the price.

The bright line rule acts like a “talk to the hand” for parenting, and here’s how it plays out in my household:

Dress Code

Pants are mandatory when the temperature dips below 50 degrees, and coats are a must below 40. Check the thermometer and that’s the end of the debate. I won’t entertain discussions about the supposed injustice of my rules regarding your self-expression before my morning coffee, nor do I care what every other kid is wearing. Just zip it—and get on the bus.

School Attendance

If school is open and you’re not sick, you’re going. We don’t do mental health days, family vacations, or “I got into a fight with my best friend” days. School is your responsibility, even on those last days of the marking period spent watching movies. If you’re allowed to leave after fifth period, that’s great! But you’ll be following the same rules as everyone else.

One Delivery Per Semester

I hate to see you learn this the hard way, but you need to choose wisely and keep track of your things. Even prisoners get one phone call, but if you forget your lunch, think twice before opting for that questionable cafeteria chicken patty. You might forget something far more important, like your saxophone or science project.

Enforced Ratings

I don’t recall hosting your 13th birthday bash, so why are you asking to see a PG-13 movie? While I know there’s a spectrum within PG-13, we’re sticking to the rating. And if you think I’m diving into Rated M games to figure out which ones are safe, you’ve got another thing coming.

No Parents, No Fun

You may be right; odds are nothing will happen if you go over to your friend Timmy’s house to play Risk before his parents arrive. But I can’t run over there to check for any potential dangers. I already have my hands full keeping up with your friends’ social media accounts. No parents? You’re staying home. Simple as that.

Coming Home on Time

If I’m at the door, you’re getting in the car. There’s no “just a little longer.” I made the effort to pick you up on time, so you need to do your part as well. If you try to convince me otherwise, I’ll politely decline, all while keeping a smile on my face—until you’re in the car.

The bright line rule can truly be a lifesaver. Setting clear limits can alleviate family stress and teach children about responsibility and decision-making.
