Things I Wish You Knew, From Your Nanny

Throughout my years as your nanny, we’ve formed a unique bond. Considering the countless times I’ve seen you dash to the laundry room clad only in your underwear, perhaps we’ve gotten a little too close for comfort. Yet, despite the many newborns I’ve swaddled, the promotions I’ve cheered for, or the juicy stories I’ve shared about the bartender who’s expecting, there are still a few things I wish you understood.

1. I hesitate to eat your food

Especially items that haven’t been opened yet. You’ve encouraged me to help myself, but I can’t shake the feeling that you’ll notice if the bag of pretzels was fuller when you left for work and is now half empty. Sure, I’ve helped you locate your car keys, pointed out your mismatched shoes, and even chased after your car as it rolled down the driveway with your coffee mug still perched on the roof, but somehow, I’m convinced you keep close tabs on the contents of your nearly expired pretzel bag. Strangely enough, I don’t feel the same trepidation when I’m sneaking your child’s gummy vitamins.

2. I have no romantic interest in your husband

Whatsoever. He seems like a decent guy, and I can see why you fell for him. Yet, after watching him put his dirty plate in the sink instead of the dishwasher, any tiny spark of attraction vanished. While I appreciate that he makes you happy and is a great dad, if I see him take out the trash one more time without replacing the bag, I might just lose it.

3. I admire you deeply

In many ways, you’re the older sister I never had. You have an amazing job, your wardrobe comes from chic catalogs, and your home resembles a stylish magazine spread. From my vantage point, which is usually a futon, you’re practically a celebrity. I aspire to be like you and often find myself splurging on the same beauty products you use.

4. I’m not a superhero; I just have the luxury of leaving

I can tackle tantrums, diaper disasters, and the occasional bodily fluid eruption with a smile because I know I can clock out at 5:30 p.m. After a particularly challenging day, I can unwind in a hot, bubble bath with a cup of tea, enjoying binge-worthy shows instead of the endless loop of PAW Patrol. If you could escape like that a few nights a week, you’d find the strength to endure toddler meltdowns without resorting to the iPad.

5. I wish you expressed your gratitude more often

Yes, I’m getting paid, but the job I do is unlike any other. It’s presented some of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences of my life. What truly makes it worthwhile isn’t the paycheck; it’s knowing I’m making a difference. Recognition comes from your appreciation, and when it comes from someone I admire, it means more than you realize.
