Parenthood is a dream and desire for many couples. However, for some, the path to starting a family is not as straightforward as they had hoped. This was the case for my husband and me. After years of trying to conceive naturally, we were faced with the difficult reality that we would need to explore alternative options. After much research and consideration, we decided to pursue in vitro fertilization (IVF). This is the story of our personal journey to parenthood through IVF.
The Beginning
The decision to pursue IVF was not an easy one. We had always envisioned starting a family the traditional way, and the thought of needing medical intervention to have a child was daunting. However, after multiple failed attempts at conceiving naturally, we knew we needed to explore other options.

Next came the egg retrieval procedure. This involved a minor surgery where the eggs were extracted from my ovaries. The procedure was done under sedation, and I was able to go home the same day. The retrieved eggs were then fertilized with my husband’s sperm in a laboratory.

The Waiting Game
After the fertilization process, we had to wait for the embryos to develop. This was an anxious and nerve-wracking time for us. We were constantly worried about the success rate and whether we would have any viable embryos to transfer.
Fortunately, we had three embryos that were deemed viable for transfer. Our fertility specialist recommended transferring two embryos to increase our chances of success. The embryo transfer procedure was quick and painless. We were overjoyed when we found out that both embryos had successfully implanted.
The Two-Week Wait
The two-week wait between the embryo transfer and the pregnancy test was one of the longest two weeks of our lives. We were constantly monitoring every little twinge and symptom, trying to decipher if it was a sign of pregnancy. The waiting and uncertainty were emotionally draining, and we found ourselves constantly questioning if the IVF had worked.
Finally, the day of the pregnancy test arrived. We were on pins and needles as we waited for the results. When the test came back positive, we were overcome with joy and relief. Our IVF journey had been a success, and we were going to be parents.
The Journey Doesn’t End Here
While our IVF journey had been a success, our journey to parenthood was far from over. We still had to navigate through the ups and downs of pregnancy and prepare for the arrival of our little one. However, we were grateful for the opportunity that IVF had given us to start a family.
Looking back, our IVF journey was filled with ups and downs, but it was all worth it in the end. We wouldn’t change a thing, and we are forever grateful to our fertility specialist and his team for helping us achieve our dream of becoming parents.
