Mom’s Thoughts as I Drift Off to Sleep

As a natural planner, it’s hard for me to unwind at the end of the day when all I want to do is relax. After a long day filled with the hustle and bustle of motherhood, my mind often races with thoughts that prevent me from falling asleep. I’m sure many other moms can relate to this nightly mental checklist that floods my brain just as I’m trying to close my eyes.

My Nightly Mental Checklist

  • What do we have planned for tomorrow?
  • What time should I set the alarm if I want to hit snooze a few times?
  • Oh no, I forgot to remind him about that last worksheet in his homework packet. Maybe he can squeeze it in before the bus arrives (I chuckle at the thought of getting that done in the morning).
  • Do we need to return any library books? Is there anything around the house that needs fixing?
  • What’s on the menu for their lunches tomorrow?
  • It’s spirit color day at school, and I believe his shirt is crumpled up in the laundry basket. I’ll toss it in the dryer for a quick press when I wake up.
  • There’s that event happening two nights from now, and I still haven’t arranged childcare. How essential is it on a scale of 1 to 10?
  • I need to prepare a covered dish for the gathering this weekend. Do I have enough ingredients at home, or will I have to make a last-minute grocery run?
  • I stayed up way too late again. I hope the little one doesn’t wake up at 4 a.m. and end up in our bed. I really need my sleep.
  • I wonder if I’ll ever get a reply to that email I sent.
  • How much should we contribute to the PTO? I appreciate the option to donate rather than participate in fundraisers.
  • The living room is a total mess right now.
  • I hope I’m not too late to book that venue for his birthday party. He has been looking forward to celebrating there.
  • I can’t help but think he might grow up and write about how disappointing his 8th birthday party was.
  • The boys played so well together tonight. They looked adorable spread out on the floor with toys and snack bowls everywhere.
  • Did I return that large soup bowl to the kind lady at church? What did I do with it? I hope she knows how grateful I am for the delicious meals she brought us.
  • Those apples in the fridge are starting to go bad. Maybe I should whip up an apple crisp with them.
  • I should do something nice for someone tomorrow. I have a little box in the laundry room cabinet that I can turn into a care package.
  • Did I remember to cancel that Amazon subscription for dishwasher tabs? We have so many now; I made the same mistake with diapers once.
  • We really should run over the Diaper Genie with the truck to celebrate our potty training success. I can’t stand that thing with the stuck foot pedal. It would be satisfying to smash it.
  • We need to declutter the garage. The pedal car has been untouched for ages. What else can I clear out?
  • I hope my family in Kansas is doing well tonight, along with our sponsored child, Rohan. Is he sleeping soundly in a cozy bed?
  • Thank you, Lord, for our blessings and this beautiful chaos we call life. Please keep our family in Oklahoma safe from the storms that are on the way. And can you also… zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
