Confessions of a Football Mom

Parenting Insights on the Sport of Kings

When my eldest son, Jake, announced he wanted to join the high school football team, I had no clue what was in store for me. I envisioned him casually running drills after school, wearing a helmet and cleats, then returning home to forget about it until the next practice. I couldn’t have been more mistaken.

As a rookie football mom, I quickly learned that high school football is practically a religion in its own right. I assumed all we’d need were some shoes since the school provided the necessary equipment. Wrong again! That inaugural year saw us making numerous trips to the sports store for back plates, socks, ankle braces, mouthguards, gloves, and a “girdle” (whatever that is). By the end of July, I’ve learned to stock up on ramen noodles and mac and cheese to prepare for the financial shock of the sporting goods store. Ah, Sports Authority, your cheerful “Would you like cash back?” just adds insult to injury.

Once the financial burden was tackled, I was faced with the sheer time commitment. Early season practices stretched from noon until 8 p.m.! Imagine trying to pack enough food for a kid who eats like every 15 minutes during an 8-hour day of intense practice, conditioning, and weight training. I’m convinced this is how food trucks became popular—exhausted football moms transitioning from packing 50 pounds of snacks to simply moving the fridge into a mobile unit. And let’s not forget the fundraisers, team rallies, booster meetings, and, of course, the iconic Friday night games. It almost feels like a part-time job where you pay for the privilege of working!

Despite the initial shock, we adapted to this new routine. Once my credit card cooled down, we embraced our new identity as a “football family,” sporting matching shirts with Jake’s number and crafting signs every Thursday night. It was all fun and games, but it wasn’t until recently that I truly appreciated the deeper value of this experience.

Jake sustained a spinal injury during our school’s biggest game of the season against our longtime rivals—a team we hadn’t beaten in over a decade. It was the fourth quarter, and we were ahead when Jake staggered off the field, ripped off his helmet, and collapsed. As the trainers rushed to his side, the game went on. I witnessed an incredible transformation in the boys; suddenly, it became personal. They had to finish the game for him.

By the time the final whistle blew, Jake was on a stretcher, waiting for an ambulance. All 45 teammates rushed to his side, knelt, held his hand, and shouted, “We did it! We won the game for you!” Big, tough teenagers were in tears, supporting him in that moment. As the ambulance drove away, the team rallied the entire stadium to cheer his name. I’ll admit, I cried like a baby.

Later that night, when the coaches visited Jake in the hospital, he clung to the jersey he had kept safe throughout his ordeal, telling his coach, “I kept it safe the whole time!” It was then I recognized the invaluable life lessons football teaches: discipline, respect, accountability, and, most importantly, loyalty. It isn’t just about cheerleaders and nachos (though I can’t deny the appeal of those nachos).

These are the heartfelt truths that aren’t shared during the initial parent meetings. They are the lessons that will shape our kids for life. Thankfully, Jake’s injury was only temporary, and he’ll be back on the field this weekend. We’ll be in the stands, rain or shine, with our signs and matching shirts, but now with a deeper appreciation—not just for Jake, but for his football brothers too. I’ve grown to cherish those boys of fall.
