My Dearest,
Today is Father’s Day, and your absence feels heavier than ever. I can hardly express how much our kids, Lily and Max, and I miss you. Our lives changed forever last March when you contracted COVID while doing the job you loved. In the years to come, Lily and Max will come to understand the incredible Speech Therapist you were. You bravely went to work at the onset of the pandemic, helping others despite the risks. You embodied true heroism, and I will make sure our children know the profound impact you made. I will also tell them about the fierce and determined fight you put up against COVID before it took you from us. I am so proud of you, and I know that one day, when Lily and Max can grasp what happened to their father, they will feel immense pride too.
I wish you were here so we could honor you today as the wonderful Dad you were. Being a father was your greatest joy, and from the moment Lily was born, you were a natural. Watching you with both of them always brought a smile to my face. I could see how happy they made you and how much you cherished being their Dad. I can still picture the three of you on the living room floor, singing “Row, Row, Row Your Boat.” That is one of Lily’s favorite videos to watch when she’s feeling down and missing you. Sometimes, she asks me to row her just like you did, and as I do, tears fill my eyes because I know it should be you there making her giggle and smile. Those moments should still be happening, and today is a poignant reminder of everything we lost when COVID took your life last April.
You know that today would have been filled with love, hugs, snuggles, and kisses. Lily and Max would have jumped into our bed, wearing their special Father’s Day shirts to celebrate you. I would have made you the Chocolate Chip Pancakes you adored, with bacon on the side. It would have been your day, spent doing what you loved most—being with our family. I can envision your smile, the one that lit up your eyes and radiated happiness. That’s the kind of Father’s Day I wish we were experiencing, but now, it’s just a dream that I hold onto.
Even though you’re not here, today is still your special day. You are Lily and Max’s Dad, and it’s important to create traditions that honor you. I believe they should have meaningful ways to remember you so that when they understand the significance of Father’s Day, they’ll know they can still celebrate you despite your absence. So, today, Lily and I will make the Chocolate Pancakes you loved, and we’ll have them with bacon because that’s how you liked your breakfast. They’ll wear a special Father’s Day shirt that reads “DAD’S IN HEAVEN BUT ALWAYS IN OUR HEARTS.” The most beautiful part is that those are words from our little girl, Lily. Whenever she gazes up at the sky, she knows she can’t reach you, and that’s what she says. You may be in heaven, but because you are forever in our hearts, we will celebrate Father’s Day in your memory.
Today, we will spend the day together as a family, engaging in activities you would have loved, such as visiting the park, going to the zoo, or enjoying ice cream. We might play outside in the backyard, which we fell in love with when we purchased this home, envisioning it as the perfect space for our family. We might even find a bridge over a stream to play Pooh sticks, something you always wanted to do with them.
Whatever we choose to do, know that you will be in our thoughts. I will share stories and memories with Lily and Max, talk about you more than usual today because it’s Father’s Day. I’ll take cute pictures of them in their shirts and post about you—Lily and Max’s amazing Dad.
Yes, today is so different from what I envisioned. I never imagined celebrating without you. It tears my heart apart knowing that countless children like Lily and Max won’t have their Dads to celebrate with today. So many young children have lost their fathers to COVID this past year. If I’ve learned one thing through this loss, it’s that I will always choose joy as a tribute to you, because I know that’s what you would want for me and for Lily and Max. Even though your absence is felt profoundly today, we will celebrate you, and happiness will fill our hearts because your love will shine through everything we do in your honor. Happy Father’s Day. We will always love you.
