Summer is Approaching: Embrace Seasonal Fashion for EVERY Body

As summer draws near, it’s that time of year again: schools are closing, pools are opening, and the beach is beckoning. Your local drive-in is ready for business, and the ice cream truck is making its rounds to signal the arrival of popsicle season. It’s a perfect moment to fire up the grill, find that ideal watermelon, or even think about renting a pontoon for a fun day out. Perhaps you’re already planning your July 4th barbecue! If you’re fully vaccinated, vacation planning might also be on the agenda. And of course, it’s time to break out the summer wardrobe.

Regardless of what summer means to you, one thing is certain: it’s going to be HOT outside for the upcoming months. While enjoying the outdoors, we’ll be sweating profusely. For many, myself included, that’s not the most pleasant aspect of summer.

As a plus-size individual, I’ve often found myself wearing clothes that were far too hot for the weather simply because I was anxious about showcasing my body. I turned an already sweltering season into an uncomfortable experience. I can’t recall a single plus-size woman who hasn’t donned the unofficial “fat girl uniform” of cropped leggings and a three-quarter-sleeve shirt at least once or twice, all while seeing thinner individuals around us in shorts and tank tops—because those are the outfits that truly make sense in the heat.

A few summers ago, I decided enough was enough. I refused to suffer through the heat just because my body takes up more space than others. I tossed aside my matronly swimsuits, retired any summer attire with sleeves longer than elbow-length, and resolved to prioritize my comfort over diet culture’s expectations regarding my wardrobe. Who decided that those of us with naturally more insulation should wear the most clothing? It just doesn’t add up.

Now, I dive into the pool without worrying about who’s watching. I wear bikini tops with skirted bottoms because they make me feel fabulous. Sleeveless dresses, shorts, tank tops, and crop tops now fill my closet. I’ve embraced my body and made peace with it, allowing myself to dress for comfort and personal style instead of trying to cover up the only body I have.

Everyone deserves to experience this freedom. Your body is a summer body, regardless of whether it’s smaller than last winter or not. Your body is perfect for shorts, tank tops, and swimsuits. Every body is a swimsuit body, just as it is. The only requirement is your own desire to put on that bikini! You have every right to relish all that summer has to offer in your body just as it is.

Don’t allow arbitrary beauty standards created by those who profit from our insecurities—like the weight loss and fashion industries—to hinder your enjoyment of summer. The sensation of cool water on sun-warmed skin is just as delightful now as it was when you were a child, racing your cousins to the water’s edge. Wear a swimsuit—any swimsuit that you adore! Give yourself permission to enjoy the lightness of being in cool water whenever possible; your body deserves it.

Remember those moments at a picnic table at sunset, trying to lick the drips from your ice cream cone before they ran down your fingers? That feeling is quintessential summer. If someone invites you out for ice cream, don’t let body shame hold you back. Slip on a pair of shorts over your already perfect body and recall how it felt before society told you that you didn’t deserve ice cream.

Everyone’s grandma had a freezer stocked with those inexpensive ice pops in plastic wrappers. Many of us still do! Let yourself enjoy one, and you’ll be transported back to simpler times, listening to the sounds of summer and savoring that sweet treat after a long game of sprinkler freeze tag. The best outfit for that? A huge t-shirt over a damp swimsuit paired with rubber flip-flops. Trust me.

There are countless summer experiences you can’t fully enjoy if you’re trapped in layers of clothing that are too hot for the occasion.

Only a small fraction of the population resembles the models depicting summer clothing in ads. Even those who fit that mold often struggle to see themselves in those flawless images. We all strive to accept our bodies, yet we’ve been sold unrealistic beauty standards. In reality, the things that make us different from the “ideal” are vital chapters in our stories. Stretch marks, fat rolls, scars, dimples, wrinkles, and all the unique features of our bodies—these are not flaws; they are proof that we have lived! Every person, no matter how “perfect” they may seem, carries evidence of life on their body.

This summer, as the sun’s rays chase away spring and usher in the heat, resist the urge to hide your body under dark colors and excessive layers in an attempt to appear smaller. You deserve to feel the sun on your face (with sensible SPF, of course), the refreshing water on your skin, and to indulge in all the sights, smells, and flavors of summer while wearing clothes that keep you comfortable.

Summer fashion is for EVERY body—especially yours!
