Teen Punk Band Lands Record Deal

The young punk group that recently made waves with their empowering anthem “Racist, Sexist Boy” has officially signed a record deal. This weekend, the band—composed of four girls aged between 10 and 16—took the internet by storm with their bold critique of anti-Asian American prejudice and sexism. Known as The Linda Lindas, they have now secured a contract with Epitaph Records.

In a now-famous performance video, drummer Mila shared her experience, saying, “Before the lockdown, a boy from my class told me his dad advised him to avoid Chinese people. When I mentioned that I am Chinese, he literally stepped back. This song represents him and all the other racist, sexist boys out there.” Clocking in at under two minutes, the track showcases the fierce energy of these young women, who are determined to make their voices heard.

The band, featuring Bela, Eloise, Lucia, and Mila, describes themselves on Bandcamp as “Half Asian / half Latinx. Two sisters, a cousin, and their close friend who channel the spirit of original punk, power pop, and new wave through today’s eyes and minds.” Despite still being in school, with the youngest member yet to enter middle school, they recently signed with the LA punk label just days after their May 20, 2021, video went viral.

The Linda Lindas formed in 2018 at Girlschool LA, a rock camp dedicated to women-identified musicians. Prior to their record deal, they appeared in the Netflix film Moxie and contributed a song to the documentary The Claudia Kishi Club. In a cute twist, LA Times reported that they recorded their last album during a sleepover.

“It’s kind of surreal since we’re still at home in our pajamas. Nothing has really changed; it’s not like we’re going out and everyone’s like, ‘Oh my God, it’s The Linda Lindas,’” Lucia told the LA Times. “But my social media feed was blowing up about us yesterday, and I was like, ‘Whoa, this is insane!’ I’m getting calls and texts from people I haven’t heard from in ages.”

As for the record deal and their new fame, Bela admitted, “I’m mostly focused on my school projects right now. I have three due on Monday, and I haven’t started any of them.”
