In a troubling development, a bartender in California has reportedly been arrested for selling fake COVID vaccine cards at his establishment, the Old Corner Saloon in Clements, for $20 each. As vaccination rates rise and eligibility expands to all adults over 16, some individuals remain hesitant to get vaccinated, leading to a surge in the underground market for bogus vaccine documentation.

Authorities were tipped off about the illegal sales and conducted undercover visits to the bar, where they successfully purchased multiple fraudulent cards. This week, the bar’s owner, Jake Thompson, was taken into custody and charged with felony identity theft and falsifying government documents, along with misdemeanor charges for falsifying medical records. During a search of the premises, law enforcement discovered materials linked to the distribution of these counterfeit vaccine cards. Furthermore, officers are also investigating one of Thompson’s employees for similar offenses.

“It is disheartening to see community members display such blatant disregard for public health during a pandemic,” stated District Attorney Mia Rivera. “Falsifying or distributing fake COVID-19 vaccine cards is illegal and poses risks to both yourself and others.” The Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control is set to take disciplinary action against the bar, which could result in the suspension or revocation of its liquor license. As of now, Thompson has not entered a plea.
