In a significant move, Peloton has announced the recall of its Tread and Tread+ treadmill models following the unfortunate death of a six-year-old child and numerous reports of injuries involving adults, children, and pets. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there have been 72 incidents where individuals or objects were “pulled under the rear of the [Tread+] treadmill,” including 29 injury reports concerning children that ranged from second- and third-degree abrasions to broken bones and lacerations.

The recall notice, released by Peloton and the CPSC, advises consumers who have purchased either treadmill to cease use immediately and contact Peloton for a full refund or other remedies. The retail prices for these treadmills were $2,495 and $4,295, respectively.

Peloton CEO Alex Hunter stated, “Recalling these products was the necessary action to protect our Members and their families. We acknowledge that we mishandled our initial response to the CPSC’s request for a Tread+ recall, and I sincerely apologize for that. Today’s announcement underscores our commitment to collaborate with the CPSC to enhance safety awareness among our Members. We are dedicated to setting new industry safety standards for treadmills.”

The CPSC had previously issued a warning about the potential hazards associated with the Tread+ on April 17, shortly after the tragic incident. Joseph Martyak, the agency’s communications director, emphasized the importance of caution for consumers using the product in environments with children or pets.

Following the heartbreaking event, Hunter provided safety recommendations, urging users to keep children and pets away from Peloton equipment at all times. Recent reports from the CPSC have highlighted serious injuries, including a case involving a 3-year-old child who suffered significant brain damage after a similar incident.

For Tread+ users, Peloton is offering a full refund until November 6, 2022, after which only partial refunds will be available. Users may also choose to relocate the Tread+ to a safer area of their home. The company plans to implement software updates that will automatically lock the treadmill after each use, requiring a 4-digit passcode to unlock.

Tread users will have the option to receive a full refund or arrange for an inspection and repair of their equipment to prevent future accidents.
