Kids’ wetsuits are essential for young water enthusiasts, whether they’re taking swim lessons, boogie boarding at the beach, or enjoying splashes in a backyard pool. These suits keep children comfortable in chilly waters, allowing for hours of aquatic fun without the usual complaints about being cold (though they might still find something to fuss about).

While they can be tricky to put on and take off, wetsuits offer significant benefits. Made from neoprene—a blend of rubber and nylon—these suits provide natural buoyancy, helping kids float more easily. However, it’s important to remember that wetsuits are not designed to be flotation devices. They also protect against scrapes, jellyfish stings, harmful UV rays, and sand. Plus, they add a stylish surfer vibe that kids love.

Various wetsuit styles differ in design, material, body coverage, and thickness (with 3mm being thicker than 2mm), which can be a bit daunting. We consulted with Alex Freeman, Director of Aquatic Programs at Surf Academy in Southern California, who shared valuable advice on choosing the right wetsuit for your young ones.

“Kids’ wetsuits come in styles and thicknesses similar to adult suits: tank bodysuits, spring suits with short sleeves and legs, and traditional full suits,” Alex explained. “Opt for suits with easy entry and exit features like velcro at the shoulders and zippers at the ankles. If your child dislikes tight suits pulling over their head, a back-zip wetsuit is preferable to a chest zip or zipperless option.”

For sizing, Alex strongly suggests using available size charts. “If your child falls into one size’s weight category and another’s height, consider how they fit into jeans,” Alex noted. “Neoprene stretches to fit, so a snug fit is key to keeping them warm. If your child has more muscle, prioritize height over weight. For slender kids, weight is more important.”
