In celebration of its 35th anniversary, American Girl is bringing back its six iconic original dolls, including Molly, Samantha, and others. If you grew up in the ’90s and longed for one of these dolls but had to forgo the purchase due to a tight budget, you’re not alone. I dreamed of owning Molly for years. Fast forward to today, and we are now the parents, with the opportunity to share these cherished characters with our own children.
American Girl is offering these classic dolls not only for kids but also for those of us who want to reconnect with our inner child. After all, we have our own funds now—unless, of course, unexpected expenses arise, like car repairs or a child’s braces. The six original dolls—Samantha Parkington, Kirsten Larson, Molly McIntire, Felicity Merriman, Addy Walker, and Josefina Montoya—are currently available on the American Girl website, and they look just as wonderful as we remember from our childhood.
These original dolls have been off the market since the mid-2010s, making this re-release a special event. Previously, securing one of these dolls meant scouring eBay or hoping for a lucky find at a garage sale. Now, at a retail price of $150, they are much more accessible compared to the thousands that collectors might pay for the original versions.
Jamie Cygielman, the General Manager of American Girl, expressed excitement about this milestone, stating, “For 35 years, American Girl has created powerful stories with smart, courageous heroines that have helped shape an entire generation of women. We’re thrilled to celebrate the first generation of American girls who grew up with these beloved characters.” She emphasized the brand’s commitment to creating meaningful experiences for families.
Each doll comes in a special 35th Anniversary Collection, featuring an 18-inch doll dressed in her original outfit, authentic accessories, and the character’s first paperback book with a vintage cover. The dolls also arrive in a collectible, retro-inspired box.
To commemorate this anniversary, American Girl is launching fun content and experiences, including an advice book written from the perspective of the American Girls, a digital album filled with character-inspired songs, and a virtual cupcake-decorating event on May 8th with Bobbie Lloyd, Chief Baking Officer of Magnolia Bakery.
While receiving my beloved Molly doll in my late 30s might not replicate the same thrill I would have felt in 1992, it’s still a delightful experience. Thanks to American Girl, we have the chance to relive our childhood joy.
