5 Conversations I’d Rather Avoid During Girls’ Night Out

As a parent, I know the whirlwind of chaos that comes with raising kids. My partner and I have navigated the ups and downs of parenting for over a decade, learning invaluable lessons about life, society, and ourselves along the way. Bringing children into the world has expanded my perspective on what truly matters. I adore my family and cherish my children more than words can express.

But there are times when I crave a break—a chance to step out of my usual routine, don my favorite outfit, and enjoy a night out with the girls. Picture this: nachos, margaritas, and an escape from the daily grind. However, if I find myself at another Girls’ Night Out discussing diaper brands or how to get sticky gum out of hair, I might just lose my mind.

We’re all experiencing the wild ride of parenthood together and can share tips and tricks. But when we have babysitters at home and are dressed to the nines, let’s steer clear of the parenting talk. Here are five topics I’m officially putting a moratorium on during our girls’ nights:

  1. Nap Schedules and Bedtimes
While it’s always nice to share parenting hacks, a night out shouldn’t revolve around the perfect nap schedule. If you have a brilliant technique for getting your toddler to nap, slide into my DMs on social media. When I’m out enjoying a cold beer, I’d much rather discuss anything but nap times. Let’s save the parenting discussions for another day and dive into something more exhilarating.
  2. Kids’ Meal Plans
Honestly, feeding kids should be simple: just give them food. It doesn’t need to be a complicated discussion about the latest food trends or how to sneak veggies into their meals. We all know how it goes—kids are picky, and we’re just trying to survive mealtime. Let’s enjoy our nachos instead!
  3. Housekeeping Tips
Cleaning? Ugh. I do it out of necessity, but when I’m out with my friends, I’m not interested in hearing about the latest cleaning hacks or how to optimize counter space. If you love organizing, fantastic! But let’s focus on having fun instead of discussing the percentage of counter space that should be designated for decor.
  4. Menstrual Cycles
We’ve been dealing with our periods since our teenage years, and honestly, it’s just a part of life. I don’t need to have another chat about it during a night meant for fun. Between diaper changes and everything else, menstruation isn’t even on my radar. Let’s raise our glasses instead!
  5. Birth Stories
Sure, bringing a child into the world is a monumental life event. But do we really need to relive the details of our births over cocktails? Unless it’s relevant to the moment or someone’s expecting, let’s move past the birth stories. We’ve done it, and it’s time to explore new discussions instead.

So, as we gather around with our drinks and delicious snacks, let’s focus on the joy of friendship and laughter. Who’s ready for another round of margaritas?
