1. Shoes Can Be Different
In my earlier years, I was all about fashion. My outfits were meticulously coordinated, from my top to my shoes and handbag. I felt like I belonged on a magazine cover! But then, societal expectations crept in, dictating what colors were acceptable during certain seasons. Thankfully, those days are behind me! Now, mismatched shoes are my jam. Crocs? Sure! I’ll wear white any time I feel like it—even while sledding in a snowstorm! I still enjoy dressing well, but I prefer to think of myself as a ‘fashionista’ with a twist; the old ‘nista is gone.
2. The Joneses Aren’t the Benchmark
I used to envy everything the Joneses had: their big house, overflowing bank account, and lavish lifestyle. But now? I couldn’t care less. I cherish my cozy home, my healthy kids, and a job that keeps the bills paid. To me, true wealth is having a loving family around me, and that’s my little paradise.
3. Dance Like Everyone Is Watching
Having spent years in ballet, tap, and jazz, I once dreamed of being a performer. Although I never made it to the stage, my passion for dance never faded. There was a time I danced only when I thought no one was watching, convinced I’d look foolish busting out the “Macarena.” But I’ve rediscovered my inner dancer! Now, I dance like everyone is watching—because they are! And honestly, who cares how outdated my moves are? I’ll dance all night if I want to!
4. Bad Hair Days? Rock a Hat!
In my 20s, I wouldn’t be caught dead in a hat. My hair was my pride and joy. Fast forward to today, and after kids and some unfortunate hair choices, I’ve embraced the beauty of caps. They save me time on styling and actually look quite chic. Now, when my hair misbehaves, I just put on a hat and call it a day.
5. Cut Out the Toxic People
Negative and controlling individuals can drain your energy faster than you can say “goodbye.” I used to believe I could help them change, but I learned that people must want to change themselves. So, I made the decision to cut those toxic influences from my life. The moment I did, I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders.
6. Cake Is Essential
The gym used to be my second home; I worked out religiously and avoided carbs like the plague. But now, while I still eat healthily, I refuse to skip dessert. Cake is practically a food group in my book, and you know what? I may not wear a size 4 anymore, but I’m a much happier eater.
7. Guilt Trips Are Out
I was the queen of apologies, often saying “I’m sorry” for things beyond my control. I finally realized that many were trying to manipulate me into feeling guilty. Now, only genuine guilt-worthy moments earn an apology from me. It takes a lot more to put me on an unwarranted guilt trip these days.
8. Herd Mentality is Outdated
Following every trend like a sheep was once my style, but not anymore. I reflect on the choices I made while simply going along with the crowd. Now, I take pride in my independence. I laugh at trends and choose my own path, and it feels liberating!
9. Embrace Aging
Are you feeling apprehensive about aging? Like me, you might not be ready to succumb to the passage of time. But there is hope—you can liberate yourself from what’s holding you back and revisit the activities you once loved. When you do, you might just feel like it’s the ’80s all over again! Don’t stop believing.

Summary
In this piece, I reflect on how life has shifted my perspective from the pressures of social norms to embracing individuality, happiness, and the joy of simple pleasures. It’s about shedding unnecessary weight, reclaiming passions, and living life fully, all while navigating the ups and downs of aging.
