JoJo Siwa is experiencing a remarkable year in her life. The beloved performer and YouTube sensation has become a household name, especially among teens and preteens. Recently, she has taken steps to openly share her sexuality, coming out as part of the LGBTQ+ community and revealing her girlfriend, Kylie, to her fans and the world.
Sadly, not everyone reacted positively to her announcement. The backlash from some individuals showed just how difficult it can be for young people like JoJo to express their true selves and pursue happiness. In a recent interview, Siwa candidly discussed the impact of this negativity on her well-being, admitting to Googling herself and stumbling upon hurtful comments shortly after coming out.
“I really shouldn’t have done that. I was hoping for supportive messages, but instead, I found a lot of negativity, with comments like, ‘I’m never buying your merch again’ and ‘My daughter’s never watching you again.’ It kept me awake for three days,” she shared.
It’s heartbreaking to think that such a sweet and talented individual had to endure sleepless nights because of online hate. However, Siwa maintains a positive outlook, stating, “I don’t want people to watch my videos or buy my merchandise if they aren’t going to support me and the LGBTQ community.”
JoJo, who appears to be blissfully in love, attributes her strength to her girlfriend, Kylie, who remains unfazed by the negativity online. “She never cares what the internet says about us,” JoJo said, highlighting the importance of having someone supportive in her life.
Proud of her identity, Siwa expressed that her journey of self-discovery was fueled by her love for Kylie, a close friend who became more at the end of 2020. “I’m still figuring out who I am. I joke that I’m ‘Ky-sexual,’ but I just identify as gay or queer because it feels right,” she explained. “Technically, I would say I’m pansexual because I believe my connection with a person is what matters.”
Being so young, JoJo has plenty of time to explore her identity without pressure. As she continues to learn about herself, it’s essential for her to know that while critics exist, there are countless supporters cheering her on.
