For my two sons, their appreciation for educators began in Pre-K, where they were fortunate enough to have exceptional and caring preschool teachers. I firmly believe that our sons’ preschool teachers have played a pivotal role in nurturing their passion for learning.
Preschool teachers offer far more than mere childcare. While those who care for our young ones in daycare are invaluable and deserving of admiration, preschool teachers encompass a different mission. In my son’s public preschool, the teacher must create lesson plans and progress reports akin to those in elementary schools. She is responsible for ensuring that she meets the educational standards set by the state while monitoring twenty children to ensure everyone is supported. Many preschool teachers hold at least a bachelor’s degree in education or child development.
The range of knowledge children bring to preschool can vary greatly. In one classroom, you might find a child who can read simple words alongside another who cannot recognize any letters. Preschool educators must adapt to the unique educational and emotional needs of each child, often coming from vastly different backgrounds. Their aim is to prepare students for kindergarten, a task they tackle with determination—resulting in many children achieving that goal.
The role of a preschool teacher extends well beyond teaching letters and numbers. Four- and five-year-olds are in a transitional stage, still close to babyhood while inching toward becoming “big kids.” They may still have occasional accidents and often experience emotional upheaval from separation anxiety. Preschool teachers are essential in supporting the complex emotional needs of these young children while also readying them for the next step in their educational journey. Every morning, you might see a child crying as their parent leaves, yet by afternoon, a group of smiling faces rushes out, eager to share the day’s accomplishments with their families.

The guidance he receives from both his teacher and aide is invaluable, laying the groundwork for his continued progress in kindergarten.
My eldest son, who is neurotypical, also experienced a significant transformation in preschool. Initially anxious about being away from me, he was excited to start school. I opted for a private program for him, where he thrived. His teacher recognized his strengths and paired him with classmates who could benefit from his influence while also encouraging him to engage with peers who could help him grow. To this day, she remains a cherished friend.
Regardless of whether a child is neurotypical like my eldest or neurodivergent like my youngest, the impact of a dedicated preschool teacher is profound. I eagerly await the day my youngest child can experience this transformative environment too.
