It seems like the world is in a pregnancy frenzy! I can count at least ten women I know who are due within the next six months. This doesn’t even include the countless expectant moms I encounter on a daily basis, all of us just trying to survive the heat and find some much-needed air conditioning. It’s as if there was a massive no-pants party nine months ago, and everyone showed up. Kudos, everyone—seriously.
With so many inquiries about my experience with unmedicated labor, I decided to compile a list of tips to help you through this journey.
1. Discover Your Mantra
During my labor, my doula suggested I choose a mantra to focus on. She proposed something like “I am one with the universe.” I, however, jokingly thought it would be more effective if she shouted “GET OUT” toward my birth canal. Ultimately, I didn’t stick with a typical mantra, but I did find a phrase deep within me that resonated throughout the process: “Kill me, kill me, please god kill me.” Not exactly uplifting, but it worked for me!
2. Get Creative
I knew I wanted to avoid an epidural, so I asked the nurse about alternative options like laughing gas, which is becoming more popular in hospitals. Unfortunately, she informed me that my only pain relief option was the dreaded epidural. So, I got inventive! I jokingly asked if she could craft a mallet and knock me out—when she declined, I laughed and called her a name. Surprisingly, it helped ease some discomfort. I did apologize later because, really, those who help you through labor deserve respect. She took it in stride.
3. Find the Humor
As I was approaching the crowning phase, I noticed my medical team stepping back to don what looked like hazmat suits. In that surreal moment, I thought, “This is the strangest orgy I’ve ever been a part of.” This thought made me chuckle and helped push my baby into the world. And when your little one becomes a rebellious teen, you can remind them of that moment, which is sure to earn you a priceless reaction.
4. Create a Playlist
I prepared a birth playlist filled with songs like Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” and Ice Cube’s “You Can Do It (Put Your Ass Into It).” Although I didn’t get to listen to it during labor, I recommend picking songs that bring you peace or even add a bit of humor to the atmosphere.
5. Be Determined
The key to an unmedicated labor is sheer will. You have to want it more than anything else. The pain will be intense, and at times, you’ll feel like giving in when someone offers you relief. But you need to stand your ground and say “no.” Only those with a stubborn streak can truly pull this off.
6. Talk to Your Baby
Take a moment to communicate with your unborn child. Let them know you’d prefer a swift and easy delivery. In my case, my daughter took the hint and arrived in just six hours. I guess my motivational speeches and promises of future pony ownership worked.
7. Listen to Your Body
If your mindset starts to falter and the pain becomes unbearable, don’t hesitate to consider medication. There’s no award for enduring unnecessary suffering—it’s about creating your own birth story. Whether you opt for drugs or not, remember that the ultimate goal is to welcome your baby into the world, and that is the most magical part of it all.
