From The Confessional: Calling Out the “Karens” of the World

Everyone has encountered a “Karen” at some point. They’re loud, often believe their opinions outweigh others’, embarrass their children, and frequently display ignorance and prejudice. If your name happens to be Karen, no offense intended—if you don’t embody the entitled version of Regina George, this isn’t about you.

However, being a “Karen” isn’t limited to those named Karen. If you’re the type to call the police on kids running a lemonade stand for not having a permit, or you report a neighbor recovering from illness because their lawn needs mowing, congratulations—you’re a Karen. If you fabricate stories to help your child bypass rules for a cheerleading squad, you’re on the Karen spectrum. And if you call the cops on a Black individual simply for existing in your vicinity, then you’ve reached the peak of Karen behavior—you’re a racist Karen.

Chances are, there’s a Karen in your life, whether it’s that distant cousin you only see during family gatherings or a neighbor who complains about your kids playing outside. While we have to tolerate them, we can strive to avoid becoming one ourselves.

It’s amusing to hear older generations label younger ones as entitled. In my customer service role, I’ve found that the majority of rude customers are actually 55 and older. Thanks, Carol/Karen/Barbara, for the reminder.

I moved to the country to escape annoying neighbors, only to have a city dweller move in next door and incessantly complain about the surrounding farms having—gasp—animals! Go back to the city, Karen; you’re no longer in charge of the HOA!

Karens often exhibit rudeness, entitlement, and ignorance. They disrespect service workers, expect special treatment, and voice complaints when things don’t suit their preferences.

When I shared my plans to adopt, I was asked why I didn’t just try the old-fashioned method. Well, Karen, it’s because my previous attempts resulted in loss. So please, just say “congratulations” when someone announces they’re adopting, instead of prying into their life.

I’ve experienced the working from home, office life, and being a stay-at-home parent. Each has its pros and cons. Why does it matter to you what someone else chooses? Live your own life, Karen.

The Karen phenomenon has only intensified during COVID, resulting in a surge of anti-mask Karens who scream at those trying to follow health guidelines. Your rights don’t extend to disrupting others’ safety, lady; you’re just embarrassing yourself.

We’ve all encountered a Karen—maybe it’s your sister-in-law who’s the epitome of self-absorption or a friend who’s become unbearably critical. It’s disheartening when we realize those we once admired have morphed into Karens, but sometimes it’s necessary to cut ties with those who drag us down.

The reality is, Karens have always existed, and they’re not going anywhere. Social media now offers a platform to bring their behavior into the spotlight when they mistreat service staff or unjustly involve authorities. While we might not be able to eliminate them, we can certainly expose their actions.
