In the early hours of the morning, bleary-eyed and weary, I was feeding my newborn when I stumbled upon something that seemed too good to be true. It was labeled as an “opportunity”—a once-in-a-lifetime chance to embark on a new venture. I could run my own business, enjoy limitless income potential, all from the convenience of my phone. It sounded incredible, and I was instantly hooked.
Curious, I began my research. This company was a fresh start, ideal for a busy mom like me who wanted to be present for her children. With a modest investment, I could run my own business without the hassle of inventory or hosting parties in strangers’ homes. It felt like a dream come true, and I signed up without hesitation.
I was captivated by videos showcasing the company’s stars achieving remarkable things with their products, convincing me of their exceptional value. Never mind that these items were priced five times higher than similar ones at Target; the allure of “magic in a bottle” was irresistible. I thought not just of myself but also of my family and friends—they would definitely want to join me on this journey. Surely, they would support my “side hustle” and appreciate my efforts for financial freedom, hoping to become millionaires themselves. It was a win/win for everyone!
I diligently followed the advice from my team members; together, we would reach the top! Social media was promoted as the best sales platform, so I started posting vibrant images of the products and linking to my website. I created a group and added everyone from my friends list without asking. Why would I? Who wouldn’t want to be part of something exciting? Once they joined, I was encouraged to message everyone about the products and the opportunity—so what if I hadn’t spoken to them in years? I was offering them a chance to be their own boss and secure their financial future!
At first, I genuinely believed in what I was promoting. I loved the products, despite their high prices, and I enjoyed a discount. People were buying from me, and I was making extra cash and even building a team. Exciting trips and swag were on the horizon—I was on a roll!
However, it didn’t take long for me to realize that the profits were primarily flowing to those above me in the hierarchy. The top earners were reaping the rewards while people like me struggled to sell a few items a day, often at the expense of friendships. It felt wrong.
I became increasingly desperate to become one of those top sellers, but I soon understood that achieving this meant exploiting others. I would either sell overpriced products to friends or recruit them to my team, pushing them to sell just so I could earn a commission. It felt gross. Plus, with so many representatives saturating the market, finding new customers became nearly impossible.
Initially, my progress seemed promising, but I hit a wall just before the point where real money could be made. I didn’t grasp it at the time, but the system is designed that way; only a select few ever break through, while the majority earn mere pennies. It’s a predatory setup—targeting young mothers, the unemployed, and those with limited education, selling them a dream that’s nearly impossible to achieve. In fact, many participants in MLMs end up losing money.
The rise of MLMs surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, as many sought ways to supplement their income. Unfortunately, these companies often made misleading claims. The FTC began taking action against them, especially those falsely asserting their products could prevent illness. It’s disheartening to see how these organizations prey on people’s fears and hopes for financial stability.
Despite my experience, I don’t regret trying to thrive in the MLM world. It opened my eyes to its harsh realities. The fortunate ones at the top are living their dream, but I would rather remain broke than ever send another “Hey girl!” message.
