The Pandemic Will End, But Some Relationships May Be Beyond Repair

In the wake of the pandemic, many individuals have revealed their true selves. For me, and countless others, this period has prompted a thorough reevaluation of my life and the people in it. Balancing remote work, home schooling, and the anxiety of a global health crisis leaves no room for negativity, including toxic relationships.

During challenging times, people’s true personalities often surface. It became apparent that being polite does not equate to being virtuous. Some individuals who appeared to be kind and understanding turned out to harbor troubling beliefs, including those who fervently advocated for reopening schools while disregarding safety measures.

This realization has been profoundly unsettling. Friends I once cherished have taken stances that I cannot reconcile with my values. Individuals I once admired have shown themselves to be hypocrites, supporting harmful ideologies and actions that contradict their professed beliefs. The dissonance between respect and reality has been painful, as has the experience of being insulted by family over social media.

I have always viewed people as fundamentally good, but this past year has challenged that belief. My innate trust has been tested. While I believe in extending grace during tough times, I’ve discovered limits to that leniency. The pandemic has forced me to choose who I want in my life more deliberately, leading to strengthened friendships and the loss of others.

As we slowly emerge from this period, we must confront the reality of our relationships. What do we do about those connections that have fractured due to divergent values? Can we truly forget what we have learned about others? Personally, I find it difficult to overlook the truths that have been revealed. I don’t wish to sever ties completely, but I recognize that I have little room for individuals whose values clash with my own.

We might maintain a cordial relationship in public—exchanging friendly greetings and pleasantries—yet the underlying knowledge of each other’s true selves lingers. While I remain open to the possibility of change, the actions of some individuals have left lasting scars that are hard to overlook.

This past year has indeed exposed the true colors of many, and those revelations can’t simply be erased.
