Dear Emma,
Soon, you will embark on the journey of middle school. Right now, I can sense your excitement about meeting new friends, exploring fresh experiences, and gaining a bit more freedom. I share in that excitement with you. This is a new chapter in your life, and I am eager to witness your growth and transformation.
Yet, I won’t lie; I also feel a bit apprehensive. I’ve heard countless tales of adolescents making poor choices, giving in to peer pressure, misusing social media, and engaging in adult activities like sexting and substance use before they’re ready. I know you’ve likely heard these stories too. A part of me wants to believe you’re too bright and too wonderful to fall into those traps. Still, another part refuses to be a naive parent who turns a blind eye to reality.
Since you are our eldest, this is uncharted territory for all of us. We’re preparing to navigate the complexities of adolescence, puberty, and middle school life. There will be moments of smooth sailing and plenty of choppy waters along the way. Through it all, I want you to hold on to these pieces of advice. If you ever feel lost or frightened, remember that I’m right there with you, ready to help you adjust your sails.
- Work Hard: Always prioritize your schoolwork above everything else—sports, friendships, and hobbies all come second. I don’t expect perfection; I just want you to give your best effort every time. If you do, I’ll be proud, and you’ll feel a sense of pride, too.
- Be Brave: You’ll encounter numerous new experiences—some will be fantastic, while others might be challenging. When faced with obstacles, stand firm in your beliefs, even if it makes you seem “uncool.” That momentary discomfort will fade, but your bravery will leave a lasting impact.
- Stay True to Yourself: You are one of a kind. Never change who you are just to fit in. If others can’t appreciate your uniqueness, that’s their loss, not yours.
- Do What’s Right: If someone pressures you into a decision that doesn’t sit well with you, trust your instincts. We’ve tried to instill a sense of right and wrong in you. Follow your heart; it knows the way.
- Organize Your Life: As school becomes more demanding, developing strong organizational skills is essential. Learn to manage your time effectively and avoid procrastination. These habits will serve you well not just in middle school, but throughout your life.
- Practice Kindness: Adolescence can be awkward and challenging for everyone. Remember that everyone is fighting their own battles. Treat others with the kindness and respect you wish to receive, even when it’s not the popular choice.
- Be Confident: You are incredible! Never forget that. You have the ability to achieve anything you set your mind to, and I believe you can make a difference in the world.
- Choose Your Friends Wisely: There’s an old saying: “You are only as good as the company you keep.” If you find yourself around people who are unkind or deceitful, it’s time to step away. Surround yourself with those who uplift you.
- We Will Always Love You: Your dad and I are here for you, no matter what. There’s nothing you can say or do that would change our love for you. If you have questions, we’ll seek answers together. If you’re unsure about something, we’ll guide you. If your heart is heavy, we’ll help carry that weight. Just reach out. Your concerns are never too big or too small for us to handle.
- Enjoy the Journey: You’re on the brink of a world of learning and experiences. While there will be bumps along the way, remember to savor the journey. Smile, laugh, build new friendships, and embrace this exciting time in your life. Trust me, it will pass quicker than you think!
