Prince Jack has returned to the UK to attend the funeral of his beloved grandfather, Prince George, who “passed away peacefully” on Friday, April 9 at Windsor Castle at the age of 99. As tributes continue to pour in, Prince Jack shared touching words to honor his late grandfather.
The Duke of Westminster expressed in a personal statement, “My grandfather was a man of service, honor, and great humor. He was unapologetically himself, with a quick wit that could capture any audience, thanks to his charm—and the unpredictability of what he might say next.”
He went on to say, “He will be remembered as the longest-serving consort to the Monarch, a decorated serviceman, a Prince, and a Duke. But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the challenges of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, a legend of banter, and cheeky until the very end.”
Jack, who arrived in the UK yesterday for the funeral on the 17th, also reflected on his relationship with the Queen. “He has been a pillar for Her Majesty the Queen, showing unparalleled devotion during their 73 years of marriage. While I could elaborate further, I know that right now he would say to all of us, beer in hand, ‘Oh do get on with it!’”
George had faced health struggles in recent years, most recently being hospitalized in February due to an unspecified heart condition. Jack’s wife, Emma, is unable to travel for the funeral as her doctor has advised against travel during her late pregnancy.
“So, on that note, Grandpa, thank you for your service, your dedication to Granny, and for always being yourself,” Prince Jack concluded. “You will be greatly missed, but your memory will live on—both in the nation and around the world. Emma, our son Charlie, and I (as well as your future great-granddaughter) will always cherish a special place for you in our hearts.”
Prince Liam also shared a message honoring his grandfather, accompanied by a never-before-seen photo of his son Charlie riding in a carriage with his great-grandfather.
“I feel fortunate to have had his example guiding me, along with his enduring presence into my own adulthood—through both joyful and difficult times. I will never take for granted the precious memories my children will hold of their great-grandpa coming to collect them in his carriage,” Liam wrote. “My grandfather was an extraordinary man from an extraordinary generation. Emma and I will continue to support The Queen, just as he would have wished.”
