The excitement builds as behind-the-scenes photos of the Friends reunion shoot circulate online. Matthew Perry even gave fans an exclusive sneak peek at the taping. As reported by Good Morning America, David Schwimmer recently shared on The Graham Norton Show that filming for the highly anticipated reunion is set to commence next week in Los Angeles. Since then, fans have been sharing images of the set on Twitter.

In a manner reminiscent of Ross’s humorous attempts to win an apartment, Schwimmer teased fans with a small nugget of information about the reunion. He noted that viewers won’t see the characters of Ross, Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, and Joey as they once knew them. “I’ll be myself. I’ll be David,” Schwimmer clarified regarding the unscripted special. “We’re not in character … we’re all ourselves, the real people.”

When asked if he prepared for filming by rewatching the series, Schwimmer humorously admitted, “You know, it’s really funny. I should have been doing that… But I haven’t been able to bring myself to catch up on the 236 episodes.” He added with a laugh, “I guess I need to watch a lot over the next five days.”

Producers and cast members have consistently expressed that a scripted reunion isn’t in the cards. “What was at the heart of the show is done,” co-creator Marta Kauffman explained in a past interview. “And let’s be honest, it’s 20 years later. Nobody looks like they did then…”

In a mysterious hint, Schwimmer mentioned, “There is one section, I don’t want to give away — where we all read something.” Lisa Kudrow echoed similar sentiments during her conversation with Rob Lowe on his podcast, emphasizing that the reunion will not involve portraying their characters. “We’re not portraying our characters. It’s us getting together, which just doesn’t happen a lot,” she shared, expressing excitement over the rare occasion.

This past week, photos of the set sent fans into a frenzy on social media. Matthew Perry also shared a now-deleted behind-the-scenes image on Instagram, humorously captioning it, “Seconds before eating a makeup brush. Not to mention reuniting with my Friends.”

Kudrow reassured fans not to read too much into the time taken for the reunion. “We’re all incredibly grateful, and we all knew it then, and know it now, that that was such a unique situation,” she reflected. “We all loved — and love — each other. And genuinely had so much fun.”

Originally slated to air last May in conjunction with the launch of HBO Max, the reunion faced delays due to the pandemic. Schwimmer explained in the summer of 2020, “The truth is, we’ll do it when we all determine it’s safe to do so. There’s no question we want to do it, and it’s going to happen.” Filming was postponed indefinitely amidst rising COVID-19 cases. Fans can look forward to the Friends reunion special airing later this year on HBO Max.
