Preschool educators are truly remarkable individuals, often likened to angels walking among us. The recent pandemic has highlighted their invaluable role, demonstrating that dedicated teachers are nothing short of heroes. Their creativity and commitment to keeping our children engaged in learning is impressive, and they certainly deserve our admiration—and a significant pay increase.
Both of my children have developed a profound appreciation for their teachers from an early age, and it all began with exceptional Pre-K experiences. We have been fortunate to have nurturing, professional preschool educators who have significantly influenced our sons’ love for learning.
Preschool teachers provide much more than mere childcare. While those who care for our little ones deserve respect and acknowledgment for their vital work, preschool teachers have a distinct responsibility. In my son’s public preschool class, the teacher is required to plan lessons and track progress similar to elementary educators. She must ensure compliance with state educational standards while monitoring a diverse group of twenty children to ensure that each child receives the attention they need. Many preschool educators hold at least a bachelor’s degree in education or child development.
The knowledge and skills children bring to preschool can vary widely. In one classroom, you may find a child who can read while another has yet to recognize a single letter. Preschool teachers must adeptly address the educational and emotional needs of a classroom filled with kids from various backgrounds. Their mission to ready students for kindergarten is challenging, yet they confront it with determination, resulting in many children achieving success.
The role of a preschool teacher extends far beyond teaching basic skills. Four- and five-year-olds are in a transitional phase, navigating their identities as they move from babyhood to the big kid stage. Some may be experiencing separation from their parents for the first time, and accidents can still happen. Preschool educators need to attend to the intricate emotional requirements of these young learners while preparing them for the structure of school life.
Each morning, a few children may arrive in tears as they part from their parents, yet by the end of the day, those same children leave with smiles, proudly sharing what they accomplished.
My son, who is the only child in his class with an Individualized Education Program (IEP), has a passion for letters and numbers. Though he was academically ready, his team believed he would benefit socially from a mainstream classroom experience. We were hopeful that being surrounded by typical peers would help him adapt to a school setting.
I cannot express enough how extraordinary his teacher has been. Mrs. Taylor understands that his primary goals are social, not academic. She communicates his progress to me candidly, whether he’s facing challenges or excelling. His classroom aide, Ms. Jones, has also been a wonderful support, making his preschool experience enjoyable.
Recently, Mrs. Taylor sent me a photo of Walker happily pushing another child on the swings. He has learned to order lunch, wait in line, and interact with peers. The lessons he’s gaining from his teacher and aide are invaluable, laying the groundwork for his future.
My older son, although neurotypical, also underwent a transformative experience in preschool. Initially anxious about being away from me, he thrived in a private program where his teacher recognized his strengths and weaknesses, pairing him with peers who enhanced his growth. Their bond remains strong even today, and I can’t say enough about the positive impact she had on his development.
Regardless of whether a child is neurotypical or neurodivergent, the guidance of a skilled preschool teacher can be incredibly beneficial. I’m eagerly anticipating when my youngest child will have the chance to experience this vital phase of education.
It’s crucial that the dedicated professionals teaching our youngest learners receive the acknowledgment they deserve. Preschool educators are the architects of our children’s educational foundations.
