As we continue to expose our teenagers to the world, they reflect it back at us in ways we sometimes overlook. We see the familiar landscapes of life, but what we often miss is the profound transformation happening within them.
As parents, we’re accustomed to taking the lead, guiding our children through life’s challenges. However, teenagers are on a quest to carve out their own paths, gradually discovering their identities and aspirations. They are the protagonists of their own narratives, beginning to understand what that truly entails.
This exploration doesn’t mean they no longer need our support. Just like heroes in a story, they require mentors—individuals who can provide guidance and direction. They need someone to teach them how to wield their metaphorical light saber. Our role is to help them recognize their potential, point them toward their dreams, and encourage them to embark on their journey toward self-discovery. They’re at the dawn of their adventure, and we have the privilege of helping them set out on this significant path.
Being a hero is no easy feat. It’s a challenging journey filled with hurdles. During tough times, it’s common for heroes to falter, make poor choices, or lash out at those who care about them, knowing these loved ones will still be there to support them on the other side. Mistakes are part of the process, and it’s our responsibility to remind them of their strengths and capabilities.
Witnessing this evolution is a true honor. Walking alongside them as they stumble and rise again is a privilege. It’s amazing to reflect on how they once fit into our arms like tiny bundles and now borrow our shoes nearly every other day. We can reassure them with our unwavering support: “I know the way, and I’ll guide you, but I also trust you to find your own path and, in turn, guide me.”
None of us are fully prepared for this journey into the teenage years, but together, we can navigate through it.
