I stumbled upon her name during a late-night scroll through Facebook: Candace Owens. Why should you care? Because the rhetoric she spreads is harmful to everyone, regardless of race or background. While there are many figures, including former President Donald Trump, who share similar sentiments, Owens has her sights set on a presidential run in 2024.
At first glance, Candace seems like a striking Black woman with a fierce determination. However, once she speaks, her words often lack sense. To see what I mean, take a quick look at her social media—though be warned; spending too long there may leave you questioning your intelligence.
Her Wikipedia page is almost nauseating to read. Described as a conservative author, commentator, and activist, the term “activist” typically refers to someone working towards political or social change. However, if you delve into her rhetoric, you may become concerned about the type of “change” she advocates for.
Some of her most troubling statements appeared in a video I watched on Facebook a few months back, where many of my friends shared their troubling support. This was shortly after George Floyd’s murder, a time when sensitivity was crucial. Owens asserted, “There was so much pressure for me to go with the popular opinion about who George Floyd was. We are being sold a lot of lies at the detriment to the Black community, the white community, and America as a whole. Our culture is unique from other communities because we are the only community that caters to the bottom denominator of our society. Not every Black American is a criminal. Not every Black American is committing crimes. But we are unique in that we are the only people that fight and scream and demand support for the people in our community that are up to no good.”
Every word she uttered deserves a collective eye roll. I would categorize Candace as someone who isn’t using her platform for good.
It’s alarming to consider that Owens could be a presidential candidate in 2024. She has tapped into a vein of easily swayed Americans who believe her rhetoric. Many Republicans embrace her because she fits into their narrative, being one of the few Black individuals who aligns with their views.
Owens professes her love for America while actively tearing down the very people who contributed to its foundation. Her reckless words show a deep-seated disdain for Black individuals, and her rhetoric has only stoked the divisive atmosphere we’ve experienced in recent years. Her belief that she could lead a divided nation is indicative of her flawed thinking, as highlighted by various commentators.
Candace does not appear to truly love her country. If she did, her words would unite rather than divide, and she wouldn’t attempt to fan the flames of division ignited by former President Trump. I wouldn’t trust him with my life, and I certainly wouldn’t trust Owens either. It’s time for the American public to wake up. We can’t afford to be misled any longer. Owens is not the leader we need in the White House now or in the future. Just imagine her negotiating with foreign leaders or her contributions to global health discussions—it’s a frightening thought.
Candace Owens needs to reflect on her identity as a Black woman; having a white partner doesn’t change her reality. Her polished appearance and knack for stirring controversy to gain favor with the Republican party do not guarantee her a nomination. If anything, let’s hope the Republican party has learned from the consequences of inflammatory rhetoric, especially following the events of January 6th. Words carry weight and can cause significant harm; hers certainly do. I will not support Candace Owens, and I hope others will join me in this stance.
