Kristen Wiig is the epitome of every mom navigating the trials of raising kids during a pandemic. During her appearance on The Late Late Show with James Corden, she shared her candid experiences as a mother of twins, often finding solace by stepping outside to sit on the curb for a few precious moments of peace.
Wiig, alongside her husband, welcomed twins via surrogate in June 2020, and they’ve been together almost nonstop since then. The conversation turned to the challenges of parenting during these unprecedented times, and Wiig’s response was hilariously relatable. When Corden asked her if she ever gets a break, she chuckled, “Um, I go outside and sit on the curb sometimes. Because I’m afraid, I don’t wanna go on a full walk because then sometimes I feel like, ‘Oh, I should be there.’ But I need to get out, so I sit on the curb. Or just walk around in the driveway and FaceTime a friend.”
Mumolo, Wiig’s co-star, chimed in, “It feels like a vacation when you just go out the door.” And honestly, it does!
Reflecting on her journey to motherhood and the IVF process, Wiig previously expressed how tiring it can be to care for two little ones. “Having two 9-month-olds is a lot! But they’re growing, and I can’t wait to see them every morning,” she said. “It’s not all just lying around and smiling at babies, though. It’s overwhelming to think about everyone else who’s struggling, and it’s hard to be good knowing that.”
Sharing her experience with surrogacy, Wiig noted, “We tried to keep the [surrogacy] process private for as long as possible. What helped me was reading about other women who went through it and talking to those who have gone through IVF and fertility stuff. It can be the most isolating experience.”
The past year has been incredibly challenging for working parents. Sometimes, even a short break between work, homeschooling, and the stress of a global pandemic is what keeps us afloat. “You forget,” Wiig joked, “a walk really helps. But then when you’re in the house, you’re like, ‘I can’t be saved.’”
Those words resonate deeply with many parents today.
