5 Things I Would Change If I Could Relive My High School Years

5 Things I Would Change If I Could Relive My High School YearsGet Pregnant Fast

If I had the opportunity to revisit my high school days, there are definitely a few things I’d approach differently:

  1. Embrace Physical Education
Imagine having fifty minutes of daily exercise, guided by a teacher or coach, in a gym, on a track, or even on a tennis court. I would have fully embraced P.E. class and tried out for every sport available. Adolescent insecurities? Forget them. I’d tackle physical education with the same enthusiasm as an athlete at the start of a marathon. Bring it on!
  2. Be a Better Friend to My Girlfriends
I spent so much time chasing after boys back then, but now I realize the value of strong friendships with my girlfriends. Those moments of bonding are rare and precious. I would focus solely on nurturing those relationships, knowing that boyfriends can always wait. The camaraderie with my gal pals is something I would cherish deeply.
  3. Appreciate My Teachers
In high school, it felt like teachers were the enemy, but with time, I’ve come to appreciate their dedication and hard work. They chose a profession that often goes unrecognized, yet they impact lives daily. I would be eager to learn from them, whether it was free clarinet lessons in band class, acting workshops, or even auto mechanics. Just think about the lively discussions I could have with English teachers today—pure bliss! But math? I’ll pass.
  4. Find My Own Path and Own It
Back then, I struggled with math and science, but I was too embarrassed to admit it. I thought being smart meant excelling in those subjects, while enjoying literature felt uncool. If I could go back, I’d confidently tell my geometry teacher that I wouldn’t need those formulas again until I was assembling furniture at 3 a.m. on Christmas Eve. Instead, I’d prefer to chat about Brontë with the librarian.
  5. Connect with Everyone
The various cliques—the geeks, the goths, the drama kids—I missed out on connecting with them during my high school years. Today, I would be genuinely curious to meet people from all walks of life, learning about their interests and talents. Think of the incredible friendships I could have formed!

As my son, Ethan, prepares to start his senior year, I wonder if he’ll graduate with any regrets or “what ifs.” But I believe that’s part of the journey. He’s already mentioned that college feels like the perfect opportunity to reinvent himself, and he’s absolutely right. If only I could return to college again—though, thankfully, there were no cell phone cameras back then.
