It’s finally happening! (Well, at least for some of us.) If you work in healthcare, chances are you’ve already rolled up your sleeve for the shot. The same goes for those aged 65 and older. And for teachers, there’s hope on the horizon as well.
For the rest of us, there’s light at the end of the tunnel. Friends, family, and neighbors are starting to get vaccinated, and new sign-up lists are popping up consistently—even for those like me, a healthy 40-year-old working from home.
What a whirlwind of emotions this is! After all we’ve endured, the idea that soon we can all breathe a sigh of relief, knowing we’ve done our part to safeguard ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities, feels monumental. Yet, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows while we wait. For instance, it’s incredibly frustrating to hear about people bypassing the system or to find out that your neighbor, who doesn’t believe in masks, is getting vaccinated ahead of you.
Imagining a world returning to “normal” seems daunting. COVID has altered so much, and it’s likely that some things will never revert to how they were. But that doesn’t stop us from holding onto hope and envisioning coffee dates with friends, family trips, and holiday celebrations in the near future. So, for now, we have just two words about the COVID vaccine: Let’s goooooo!
I just want the COVID vaccine!!!! I want my life back!!!

I’m ready for my vaccine now! Go Alex, go!
Confessional #25816304
I’m feeling intense vaccine envy. It’s disheartening to think this will never end, that the government isn’t getting it together, and I’ll end up seriously ill before I ever get the shot.
Confessional #25816395
I’m grateful my health keeps me at low risk for severe COVID, but seeing my state’s vaccination timeline is crushing. It’s going to be forever before I can get it…
Confessional #25813926
Many of us are grappling with extreme vaccine envy. We’re thrilled for those around us who are getting vaccinated, but we can’t help but wonder, “What about me?!” My cousin, who is relatively young and healthy, got vaccinated by lying about her health status. I worry she has fictitious disorder like her mom.

I desperately want the COVID vaccine. It’s infuriating that my in-laws, who support Trump, got it before me.
Confessional #25816904
Convincing my boomer parents to get the vaccine is exhausting. Just give it to those who actually want it!
Confessional #25815016
My partner and I both have serious health issues that put us at high risk for COVID, yet we’re not considered sick enough to get the vaccine sooner than those with no risk factors. This system is messed up.
Confessional #25815968
Furthermore, the rollout system in many areas is, to put it mildly, flawed. I’m convinced there’s a special place in hell for those who are healthy and jump the line. I’m terrified that vaccinated people will think life is back to normal while we’re still in the dark about the efficacy against new strains. What if the vaccine isn’t the end of this?
Confessional #25817405
I’m nervous about receiving my COVID vaccine today. I know it’s the right thing to do and it’s not a microchipped shot or anything. I just hope my body reacts well.
Confessional #25816561
I receive my second COVID vaccine on the 19th. After months of waiting, I can finally go back on fertility treatments for a second child. My partner and I agreed to only try a maximum of six cycles this time; if not, we’ll stay a family of three. Now I’m anxious about both possibilities.
Confessional #25815380
I suffer from kidney disease and can’t find any information confirming it’s safe for me to get the vaccine. I feel trapped regardless of my choice. Life will never go back to the way it was for anyone.
Confessional #25814653
Despite the hope the vaccine brings, it also raises fears. Will people stop wearing masks too soon and trigger another surge? How will my body respond? What about my partner, parents, and kids? Will the vaccine interfere with existing conditions? While fears linger, we know a vaccine is better than none.
My state just announced the next tier of vaccinations. I hope pharmaceutical companies are preparing for new variants in their vaccine deliveries. I’m terrified of contracting COVID and not surviving.
Confessional #25815844
Every day feels like a “snow day” for my little boy and me since March. This is unnatural, and I’m exhausted from trying to hold it together until the vaccine arrives. Our lives are genuinely tough.
Confessional #25815900
I’m going stir-crazy. My anxiety paralyzes me; I keep Googling vaccine updates. I’m over housework and crafts. The monotony is driving me mad.
Confessional #25814852
Our state just approved COVID vaccinations for senior living communities. Of course, my 84-year-old grandparents contracted COVID just last week—ONE WEEK before they were eligible. My grandpa has cancer. Ugh, COVID.
Confessional #25815171
Because let’s face it, COVID is awful. This past year has been a nightmare. The repetitive cycle feels like “Groundhog Day,” stuck in the house with our children week after week, unable to see our parents and grandparents. It’s all so disheartening. So yes, we’ll take that vaccine as soon as we can, please and thank you.
I got my in-laws their first vaccine dose today. I’m relieved; they could be the reason my partner and I contract COVID.
Confessional #25813118
My neighbor, who works in medicine, received her first vaccine shot, and I’m thrilled. She’s the first person I know to be vaccinated!
Confessional #25816305
My parents are getting their first COVID vaccine tomorrow, marking a step towards relief for essential worker parents. We haven’t seen them since November 2019.

Even though many of us have to wait a bit longer, 2021 feels promising. There’s a sense of optimism and relief, knowing our families and loved ones will soon receive protection from this monster that has taken so much from us.
So keep it going, Alex. Keep those shots rolling out to cities and states so they can get into arms as quickly as possible. We need our teachers back in the classroom. We need our kids to hug their grandparents again. And we could really use a well-deserved Mom’s Day Out (and by “day,” I mean a “week”—a week far away in a quiet place where no one asks for snacks or help). None of this can happen until we’re all safely vaccinated.
