When it comes to relationship goals, few couples can measure up to Kyra Morgan and her husband, Jake Bell. Together since 1988, the pair has shared a remarkable 33 years of love. To put that in perspective, it’s about two-and-a-half times longer than FDR served as president. However, with their children, Lily, 28, and Max, 31, leaving the nest, Kyra experienced a moment of introspection about her marriage.
“One of the things I found myself asking was, ‘Do I even like my husband?’ I truly hope so. I want to enjoy spending time with him,” Kyra reflects.
As a mother, Kyra adopts a more relaxed stance, encouraging her kids to approach her with their issues rather than prying into their lives. Thanks to her acting career, she can also explore vastly different experiences. In her latest comedy, Call Your Mother, available for streaming, Kyra portrays the quirky Jean, a mother who shares breastfeeding stories during casual chats with her children and assists her adult son with minor issues like splinters.
“The notion of calling your mother feels more poignant than ever,” Kyra shares. “No one warns you that this parenting journey is for life. Even as my kids grow, being a mom remains my primary role.”
Empty Nesting and Pandemic Parenting
In an interview, Kyra discusses the challenges of empty nesting, parenting during a pandemic, and the notion that being a mom is a lifelong commitment.
“It’s refreshing to finally see you in a comedic role, especially since laughter is so needed right now,” one interviewer states.
“I love comedy. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do more of,” Kyra responds. “Given the hardships the world is facing, humor is crucial. I hope we get renewed for a second season to perform in front of a live audience. I want to create a storyline that begins with a problem and resolves it by the end.”
The dynamic of family interactions has shifted dramatically during the pandemic. Kyra acknowledges, “I’ve never spent this much time with my kids, and it feels unending.”
Recalling her early days as a mother, Kyra remembers a moment on set with the legendary Paul Newman. “I was 23, breastfeeding my son on the set of a film, and Paul told me, ‘You’ll never stop worrying about them.’ I had never considered that possibility before.”
She continues, “I think about my kids all the time—what they’re doing, how they’re coping. I try to respect their independence while being there for them if they ever need advice.”
Reflections on Marriage
When asked about adjusting to life as an empty nester, Kyra admits, “It made me reflect on my relationship with Jake. I wondered if I still liked him after spending so much time together during the pandemic. Fortunately, I realized I do! We still have plenty to talk about beyond just the kids.”
Kyra concludes that the fear of empty nesting often overshadows the reality. “They leave and come back different, but witnessing their growth is incredibly rewarding. I think, ‘You did well. You didn’t mess it up!’”
Returning to Work
Returning to work during such uncertain times is both daunting and fulfilling for Kyra. “I couldn’t be happier on this set. Every day is a challenge, but I feel I’m improving. Comedy requires precise timing, it’s like math.”
She adds, “I love my cast, and we’ve formed a bond through our shared experiences. Everyone’s grateful to be working, even with the safety measures in place. I feel a responsibility for our team.”
