Thompson noted that on that day, Green was wearing high heels, while she herself was in flats. “I remember her saying, ‘I knew I shouldn’t have worn these heels. How will I escape?’” Thompson said. They quickly found a pair of sneakers from one of her staffers, ensuring that Green could flee if necessary.
Since her election in 2019, Green has faced relentless attacks from her Republican colleagues and former President Trump. Her family has endured threats that even led to temporary FBI protection. She has been subjected to threats of violence and harassment simply for her progressive stance and her ability to hold powerful individuals accountable for their actions. It’s no wonder she was terrified during the insurrection considering the open disdain some in Congress have shown towards her life and safety.
Many of Green’s and Thompson’s colleagues have echoed their calls for accountability from those who incited the insurrection, with some even live-tweeting their locations inside the Capitol building. Thompson mentioned that they spent approximately six hours hidden in her office on January 6th. “No one came to check on us,” she said. “We heard voices in the hall but had no idea if they were police or intruders. We stayed silent, turned off our phones, and hoped they would just pass by.”
