During the pandemic, live music took on a whole new form. Remember when we all eagerly anticipated 2021, hoping it would be a breath of fresh air compared to the chaos of the previous year? Well, it seems 2021 has brought its own surprises, including the innovative “space bubble” concerts introduced by the band The Flaming Lips.
Lead vocalist of The Flaming Lips, Max Harper, shared vibrant images from their January 22, 2021, performance on social media, and it looked absolutely surreal. Every band member and attendee was safely contained in individual bubbles, surrounded by flashing lights, disco balls, balloons, streamers, and a mountain of confetti. After nearly a year of social distancing, this event seemed to offer just the thrill we needed.
According to reports, there were 100 bubbles, each accommodating up to three individuals. Each bubble was equipped with ample air supply for over an hour, a speaker, a fan, water, a towel for condensation, and even a sign reading “I need to use the bathroom/It’s warm in here.” Concert-goers could show this sign to staff, who would then assist them to the restroom (masks on, of course) or provide cool air when needed.
Before entering their bubbles, attendees were required to wear masks outside of them but could remove them once inside. While The Flaming Lips have previously performed in bubbles, this marked the first instance where the audience shared the same experience. This unique setup attracted cautious music lovers and introverts alike, epitomizing the feeling of being “alone in a crowded room.”
However, I do have some questions. With the heat and bathroom breaks in mind, if you’re trapped in a bubble for hours, the cologne your partner wears might become unbearable. Plus, those sharing bubbles would need to agree on some unspoken rules regarding in-bubble burping or farting. Once those terms were settled, I’d be all in! Anything to escape the confines of home and reconnect with the world—even if it means being encased in plastic.
As shared in an instructional video by Harper, at the end of the concert, everyone had to roll their bubbles to the exit, where they were required to reattach their masks before unzipping and leaving the venue. “Safety, safety, safety,” Harper emphasized. “But fun too!” What wild times we’re experiencing!
