While 2021 ushered in a new wave of hope, it’s clear that our nation’s political rift remains as deep as ever. This divide has devastated relationships, severing marriages, friendships, and even family ties between siblings, cousins, and parents.
Perhaps I’m being overly optimistic, but I genuinely believe things weren’t as contentious before the Trump era. My political leanings have always been on the left, but prior to the Trump campaign, I could engage in constructive conversations with those on the opposing side. Back then, Democrats and Republicans occasionally collaborated, and there was room for moderate views without being labeled a traitor by both parties.
I find solace in the idea that, without the vitriol and divisive rhetoric of a certain former president, our country might have a chance to mend some of these wounds. I hope that marriages and friendships can be restored, and that families who haven’t spoken in years can find forgiveness for the harsh words exchanged.
The damage caused by Donald Trump in fracturing our nation is profound, but I believe we can heal. We are stronger than the negativity that once engulfed us. Without the relentless barrage of his self-centered tweets dominating our social media, we can aspire to move forward—hopefully together—and truly be great again.
With the combination of political disagreements and the fallout from COVID-19, I feel isolated—really, extremely alone.
Confessionals

In a group chat with my family, who support Trump, I lost my cool and let them have it. Sorry, not sorry!

I think I’ve spoken to my sister for the last time over politics. Here’s to the relationships shattered by Trump, folks.

I shared a funny political video with my sister, and she went off on a tangent about government brain chips. She keeps ranting about taxes and her hatred for women in politics. Wow, I had no idea how far off the deep end she’s gone!
Siblings have stopped communicating, grown adults avoid their parents to escape political diatribes. It’s heartbreaking to witness so many cherished relationships slip away. Many of us feel profoundly alone, as politics continue to drive us apart.

My husband is the only person I can share my political views with honestly. If my family and friends heard my thoughts, they would be appalled.
Confessional #25776753
I’m genuinely saddened and concerned about how politics are tearing our country apart.
Confessional #25753350
It’s especially painful to lose friends right now when we crave support and kindness more than ever.
I’ve ended friendships over political disagreements and will continue to do so. I refuse to associate with individuals who endorse human rights violations and celebrate the inhumane treatment of others.

My husband is friends with a couple of Trump supporters. I’ve forbidden him from taking our kids to their home. I won’t expose them to such toxic views. My husband may not care about politics, but I do.

Differing opinions on politics and COVID are ruining my friendship with my best friend, and I’m okay with it. I’m emotionally drained and cutting out everything toxic.
Yet others are choosing to sever ties with those who perpetuate the hate that Trump embodied. Life can feel lighter without the darkness in your inner circle.

Just two and a half hours ago, my marriage ended over politics.
Confessional #25800375
My husband and I had a terrible argument about politics, and I’m terrified he’ll want a divorce just because we disagree. We’re compatible in every other way, and it wouldn’t be fair to either of us or our kids to split.
Confessional #24056048
My husband’s constant political rants are pushing me towards the end of our marriage.

I told him if he keeps discussing politics, I might just drive away and disappear. He knows I mean it.
Marriages across the country are ending due to unbearable political differences. How can anyone share a bed with someone who supports a racist who boasts about sexual assault? For many, leaving isn’t an option, trapping them in partnerships that have lost all respect.
The damage is undeniable, and I hope that those who were drawn into bizarre conspiracy theories or deceived by Trump’s lies will eventually see the light and be welcomed back into our lives. Until then, we must either maintain distance or engage in superficial interactions with those who still hold onto such hateful views. Protecting our children and mental health is paramount as we strive for a more positive future in this new era.
