Let’s Be Honest, You’ve Probably Done This Too

Parenting is a wild ride, isn’t it? After two decades of navigating the ups and downs of raising kids, I can confidently say that I’ve had my fair share of “not-so-proud” moments. Yes, I’m talking about those times when I’ve resorted to mouthing off or even throwing a cheeky gesture behind my kids’ backs. I mean, we’re all human, right?

As many parents can attest, our children are the shining stars of our lives, the reason we smile (and sometimes cry). They bring us joy and laughter, but let’s be real—they can also push us to our limits. My kids have had me in tears more times than I can count, often leaving me wondering how I ended up here. You know, the moments when you thought, “My child would never do that,” only to find out that, yep, they totally did. And then, just when you’re ready to lose it, they flash that innocent smile that melted your heart from day one. How do they do that?

Here’s a not-so-embarrassing list of those moments that have pushed me to the brink—complete with a few “behind-the-back” gestures:

  1. When my oldest hit middle school, it was like living with a tiny, angst-filled stranger. One day, as he and his friends strutted by without even a glance in my direction, I couldn’t help but feel hurt. It wasn’t my finest moment when I shot him a quick gesture as he disappeared into his room.
  2. Cooking for a family of seven can be chaotic. When a couple of kids decide they’re not hungry at dinner time, let’s just say that certain words might slip out. They might be silent, but if you’re good at reading lips, you’ll know exactly what I’m thinking.
  3. Having all boys is a reality check like no other. They seem blissfully unaware of any mess—like when I ask them to clean their rooms and they claim it’s already done. The stench alone can make any mom want to scream, or at least throw a middle finger at the door before walking away. But remember, they may win some battles, but we’ll always win the war.
  4. Our youngest kids are learning from their siblings, and they can be just as charming as they are mischievous. When they roll their eyes at you, it’s easy to find yourself reacting in a way you never thought you would. Sometimes, a little smirk behind their back is the best way to cope.
  5. Teenagers and their girlfriends! Need I say more?
  6. The endless requests can be overwhelming: “Mom, I need new shoes,” “Mom, I need money for dinner,” and so on. After years of hearing this, the phrase “You won’t do this for me?!” can really test your patience. I can’t say I haven’t used a few gestures or a few choice words in those moments.

In summary, while our kids can bring us to our lowest points, they are also the greatest joys of our lives. Despite the chaos and frustrations, we love them more than anything. They’re lucky to have us, just as we are lucky to have them!
