Imagine a small girl, curled up on the floor, hugging her knees in silence.

Trigger Warning: Discussion of abuse.

When someone is physically harmed, the reaction is immediate; most people recognize it as abuse and rush to help. However, emotional and psychological abuse often goes unnoticed, deeply woven into the fabric of life until it feels normal.

Some endure daily insults, belittling actions, and relentless manipulation that create chaos in their lives.

Consider a young girl whose father uses her as a pawn in a bitter divorce, taking her away for a summer without anyone intervening. She spends her days watching cartoons at her grandmother’s house. After the divorce, her father remarries, choosing to erase her from his new family’s life. He avoids contact and falsely claims financial hardship. The girl feels invisible.

Her mother undergoes a transformation, becoming a figure of anger and frustration, lashing out at her daughter for the father’s abandonment, at her workplace harassment, and even at her own choices that were meant to empower her. The little girl is left to fend for herself, armed only with a green marker and her imagination. She writes her first story, filled with misspellings but profound meaning.

When her mother’s anger erupts, the girl is punished in cruel ways, such as being locked in the garage or made to sit at the front door in her underwear, exposed to the world. The girl learns to hide when she hears footsteps, always fearing the scrutiny of neighbors.

As her father begins sporadic visits, he neglects the girls, leaving them alone in the car for hours while he indulges in golf. The girl is often caught in the middle of her parents’ toxic battles, coerced into betraying one for the other. She wants to show her love, yet she always faces punishment for her honesty.

With babysitters often being elderly family friends, the girl and her sister are subjected to inappropriate demands from a teenage boy who babysits them. To watch their favorite show, they must endure humiliation. Despite her protests, her sister follows the crowd, while the girl bravely refuses, facing isolation instead.

As adolescence arrives, the girl seeks identity and belonging, pushing boundaries. Her mother locks her out if she returns home late, prompting her to pack essentials for nights away. She learns to break into buildings for shelter and sometimes sleeps in parks. Her father’s home is not a safe haven.

The girl’s belongings are often discarded by her mother, who hands them off to friends, declaring her daughter a burden. This leaves the girl’s friends confused and wary, as they are told to steer clear of her.

At just 15, the girl finds love and becomes pregnant, finally feeling what true affection should be. However, her mother’s rage intensifies, threatening to take her child away, insisting she is unfit to be a mother. Seeking peace, she moves in with her grandparents, but her mother’s threats continue.

The girl’s sister struggles even more, later diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Their relationship spirals into chaos, marked by fights and crises that often involve emergency services. The girl feels an obligation to clean up the messes left behind.

As time passes, the girl evolves into a woman, creating coping mechanisms to survive her painful past. She organizes her life meticulously, striving for happiness and stability, yet she avoids confronting her deep-seated emotions. She believes that acknowledging her pain would disrupt her newfound order.

Despite her success, the ache from her past lingers. When faced with setbacks, she retreats to self-loathing, recalling the harsh words from her childhood. She internalizes pain instead of expressing it, burying disappointment in mental drawers.

Family ties pull her back, even when she tries to distance herself. Their promises of change often lead to familiar pain, with police involvement and emotional upheaval becoming routine. Each time she lets them back in, she finds herself repeating the cycle of hurt.

Her marriage initially seems like a refuge, yet signs of her husband’s indifference and substance abuse emerge. The once vibrant love turns into a battlefield of neglect and isolation as communication breaks down.

One night, an encounter with her husband’s rage brings back memories of her father. When he finally leaves, she discovers the remnants of his anger, graffiti on the garage walls echoing her past. She confronts her pain again, and rather than allowing it to consume her, she takes the brave step of enrolling in law school, determined to overcome her trauma.

Exhausted yet resilient, she embraces her identity as a survivor. She dedicates herself to helping others, especially those who feel unheard. Yet, an emptiness remains, a void she cannot quite fill.

For too long, she has minimized her trauma, denying her suffering while enabling her abusers. Now, she stands at a pivotal moment, realizing that moving forward requires acknowledging her past. It’s a daunting task, but she begins to prioritize her own needs and rewrite her values.

As she embarks on this journey of self-love, she needs encouragement. This will undoubtedly be her most challenging endeavor yet.
